You can get them to make you a nice sandwich. Now the Dutch concept of a sandwich is quite different than in the US, so you will have to communicate your needs. Beware of them trying to slather margarine all over it
This company always has some nice chorizo which I recommend.
LOVE that place.
We stopped in there one afternoon for there special which was a 2eu cheeses and sundried tomatoe sandwhich on a bagette.
It ended up being creme cheese, when i asked if i could also get some dutch cheese, they happily added that for no extra charge.
Great customer service, we came back a few more times.
We get lunch from Haartenkass sandwich shop in the Jordaan by the Pulitzer. I get De Dubbel – roast beef with avocado, bacon, cream cheese, tomato, lettuce, capers, and pine nuts - on dark pumpernickel wheat pistol roll with seeded top. D gets the usual Rofrirol again (this time with onion added – Roast Veal, Roast Beef, Ham? lettuce, pepper sauce, on white). As they are making our sandwiches, the radio behind the counter is playing Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl”. I almost expected the sandwich boys to start singing and doing a little line dance! D had nodded to the Middle Eastern man in the back who he knows for a few years, and the counter man who made our sandwiches says to D “I thought I recognized you”. D said “Yeah, I have been coming here for years, I remember when the counter was over there, and I’m from back when the old man was here (the severe looking Dutch/German man who used to run the store). D asks is the old man around, and the counterman replies “oh yeah, he’s still alive and kicking”. D says “alive and bitching you mean” and the counterman nods and laughs… As I was wandering over to look at the garden, the man gave D a quick compliment on knowing his change - another change moment!
We had wanted to sit on a bench by the canal and eat, but there only a few benches around the Pulitzer, and it was a busy day with little chance of getting one, so D paused for a moment to think. The counter man reminder us we could sit out back (had seen it before, but D said he only ate there once). As famous as Amsterdam is for the canals and front architecture of its buildings, they also have wonderful “hidden gardens” that are basically the center of the square or rectangular block buildings. Not all blocks have them, some are large courtyards, some are cut up storage, some are interior ground floor buildings/apartments, etc. The most famous of these is the Benjinhof. But I digress… We are now in the rear back middle of this section of the block patio garden area. It’s a large rectangle in shape, about 12 feet wide and 24 feet long at points. We can see up five floors of different buildings, ladders, pipes, windows, and roof edges. The garden courtyard has mounds of honeysuckle vines all over the roof in front of our table, and the balcony of the patio we can see above us and what looks like an artist’s shop/studio. It’s funny, but I had no idea honeysuckle was international. There is a riot of other plants I don’t know growing from the balcony flower boxes, and from planters all around the patio. There are a few bees, but I try to ignore them as we sit at one of three small tables.
The boys behind the counter are now singing Billy Joel (but no dance yet), and then next the “Friends” theme song comes on, and it’s a very sweet moment. We enjoy amazing flavored sandwiches on perfect bread, in the middle of a private garden. The counter man comes out for a moment to smoke a cigarette and chat with us. We also get to dissect the Dolphin brand logo water bottle we got from the Dolphin Coffeeshop, and make small notes, and giggle and enjoy. A perfectly beautiful moment in an Amsterdam courtyard…
This little place, located near the "nine streets" area is the best Greek food I've ever had. They will pack your food for take away or serve you there but the quality is unbeatable. We were staying a a nearby apartment and found the take away a great option. The stuffed peppers, mousaka, Greek meatballs, dolmatas, potato salad are all as good as can be. The roasted potatoes are lemony and crisp.....the owner and his wife are both charming.
