Getting from Holland to London?

Post by abcdabcd »

I'm in Holland currently and want to go to London for a day but, I'm not sure which would be the best route to take at a reasonable price. I was thinking the ferry or even a plane ticket from Ryanair would cost about 100 euro. I think this part I can probably decide on but, once I arrive in the UK I need to get to Central London and I'm unsure about how to get there from London-Standsted airport or Harwick if I take the ferry.

I suppose I'm supposed to take either the subway or train but, do they have websites that show the train schedules and routes like they do in NL? Since I'm not sure which train or subway to take etc..

Also for some reason on the stenaline site where you can go to book the ferry, it seems to only show routes from Uk to Holland but, not from Holland to UK, do they only sell tickets to UK residents?

Thanks

what part of holland are you in?, if your in the north holland region then an easyjet flight from schipol to gatwick, luton or stanstead is best, if your nearer eindhoven a ryanair flight from there to stanstead is best, if your able to drive then forget about going through harwich its much cheaper &quicker to drive to calais, if your in the south a train to brussels then london wont take to long (but will probably be more expensive than flying), hope this helps

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm currently in Apeldoorn, NL. I think I'll probably just take the ferry, anybody taken it before? I think they quoted me a pretty good rate, 115 euro without a cabin if I take the day train and 160 euro if I get a cabin for the night ferry (when returning).

These prices include the rail tickets to get to Hook of Holland from Apeldoorn and also includes the rail to get from Harwich to Liverpool Street Station. Also is included the return fare including the rail tickets to get back from Liverpool station to Harwich, and back to Apeldoorn from the Hook of Holland.

I think it would cost me about 20 euro just to get the airport from Apeldoorn whether it's to Eindhoven or Schiphol plus to return is probably another 20 euro just for the train.

I am thinking of going to England for the last few days of my trip next April and have been exploring transport options. Where do you book the train and ferry that you mention?
I visited Apeldoorn last Jan. and picked up some good weed from The Bunker, really friendly bud-tender there also....friendly people in Apeldoorn. 8)
If I don't see you no more in this world, I'll meet you on the next one.

Yeah, I know which shop you're referring to, I've been there got a good deal on 5g northern lights also had spacecakes. That place is kind of small though, small seating area, another good Apeldoorn cs with decent seating space and quality strains (picked up black widow from there) is "Bazar". It's around the same location near Apeldoorn centraal station close to Hoofdstraat.

As for the ferry/train the site is - stenaline.nl - originally I was going to the UK site so that's the reason I couldn't find out how to book from NL to UK. Also, it would be better to call them to do the booking, since on the site, they told me, if you select "English" as your language you can't purchase the rail tickets for some reason.

So I spoke to them on the phone and they did the booking for, "Rail and Sail" and told me that I could pay for everything when I t arrive at the port for departure and I just need to purchase the rail ticket from Apeldoorn to the port and they would refund me once I pick up the tickets and pay for the booking. If you just do it on the site (English version) you'll end up paying for just the sail tickets.

Here's their number:
0031 (0) 174-315811 - stenaline - they close at 18:00 and they say they require the booking to be 8 days in advance (including weekends).

hope that helps

I really can't stress enough how bad rail'n'sail is. It seems like a good idea at the time, but if you get a rough crossing you won't get any sleep. I made that mistake, and the whole of my first day I felt like death.

Did you have a cabin? How bad was it, were you falling off the bed or something like that? I can't sleep on planes either even when I came here from the U.S. for the 12 hr or whatever flight, couldn't get any sleep in the chairs.

Though we had a smooth overnight sail and I experienced no discomfort on board, for a day after I had the swaying feeling everytime I sat still. I did not notice until I took a seat at the first CS I visited. It was quite annoying and took away some pleasure from smoking. Although it was a nice way to travel I won't take that manner of transport again. Your mileage and sea legs may vary.

I've done this 3 times. Always at night, with a cabin. I was never thrown out of the bed, but when the boat is rolling and rising up and down with the water, it is very hard to get to sleep (for me)
TBH, coming over to the UK from NL I usually get so stoned I cant not sleep.

Well I returned from the rail and sail yesterday. I have to say I thought it was a pretty good experience. The only time really I felt the swaying was when I was laying in bed, and it didn't feel bad at all (maybe since I didnt have a rough crossing), it was actually pretty relaxing for me like I was on a waterbed.

I didnt have any swaying feeling afterwards either. I've never been on a cruise before so it was an interesting experience, it was definitely better than I had expected. They have two restaurants on there, a few bars, slot machine area, computer area for internet, a game room with ps3's and also a cinema. I never even checked into any of that prior, never knew in advance they had all that.

Plus the ship is very clean and modern looking all throughout. Not to mention all the great views from the sea, where I'm from in Texas, I don't see views like that often.
