Firefox Browser

Post by Doog »

Does anyone use this browser for their internet activities?

How does it compare to Internet Explorer?
Any problems setting up/maintaining the program?
Does it work with all Internet Service Providers or does it simply replace Internet Explorer as a browser?

My ISP is AOL and I have had problems with certain sites when I access the internet through the AOL link.

I have to use Internet Explorer to access this site :!:

It's certainely better than IE, but better still is opera (http://www.opera.com) tabbed browsing, more secure than both IE and FF.

I use Firefox..... it has certain advantages over IE. I particularly find the tabs useful.

IE7 has tabbed browsing, and so do most other browsers now. Mozilla actually wasn't the first to use tabbed browsing, I think that was Opera.

There's 2 main reasons one would choose firefox:
-Added security
-high modularity

I use firefox because of how convenient it is. All my search engines are accessable from the search bar. Everything has a keyboard shortcut (ctrl-w to close a tab, ctrl-pgdn to go to next tab, ctrl-t to open a new tab, F6 to select address bar...) Plus there's a pluginf ro everything. Built in ftp client, bult in irc client, automatic link caching, an option to open an IE window inside a firefox tab, a whole range of popup blockers...

Basically the sky's the limit with firefox.

Also, Opera is a great browser, but I don't use it because 1. I'm already too used to firefox and 2. The firefox developer's community is much much larger, meaning more extensions and upgrades and updates and stuff. =P

Its in Beta stages still, d/l it for yourself http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx

Edit: Everyones forgot to mention that some sites wont load with Firefox & Opera as well, I'd suggest you get a decent ISP as AOHELL are pretty shite.

Yep, checked it out on the Windows Update site, and if it's got all the other stuff that Firefox and Opera has (apart from sites not working) then I'll happily wait for the Beta version to become the full version.

The thing about AOL is that I'm stuck with them for the rest of the year, having entered into a 12 month subscription last December. I was previously with BT and I wish I had never left them.

When I phoned BT to cancel my subscription, they even warned me about previous customers who had switched to AOL and experienced problems.

Ha, won't happen to me I thought (surely not again anyway)

The thing about me is that IT ALWAYS HAPPENS TO ME.

On risk of changing the topic to ISP's too much..

Doog, you might be better off with another BT lined company, Tiscali, Bulldog, UKonline all use the same lines as BT and AOL but normally for less money and without the problems you get with AOHell.

I hate to sound like an elitist (you wouldn't think so, but I really do), but if a site can't be universally displayed, 99 times out of 100, it's not worth looking at anyway.

As for AOL, well, I learned my lesson years ago. Have you all seen the today show bit where they featured a guy who called AOL to cancel his subscription and they kept him on the phone for over 20 minutes?

It's pretty funny.

Man, that's amazing. Roll on December when I call up to cancel mine.

I'll be ready for em.

There has always been a lot of "on-hold" time when I have had the unfortunate need to use the helpline.

The helpline in the UK is an absolute nightmare. You can call multiple times about the same issue and if you speak to different people then you get different answers.

Don't get me wrong, things are running smoothly now but it took a long time to get off the ground.
