Cheapest way by car?

Post by Boner »

After not being able to go with Kermit I've been thinking about day tripping by car, the mrs doesn't fancy that so I'm thinking south Holland somewhere for 1 night, whats the cheapest way to cross the water and does anyone know of any places like Travelodge near the southern border?

I'd leave the car at Harwich, go to hook as foot passenger, stay in a b&b for €25, there is coffeeshop comic in the hook, great NLX...or Maassluis just a2 stops on the sprinter...Rotterdam 30 mins

I've done the coach to Amsterdam a few times when I first started going and to be honest I'm not that comfortable on a coach (too many pies and pints later), we'd go in the Mrs' company car so we can probably blag some of the fuel costs, dont fancy going as a foot passenger either to be honest as I intend on hiding a bit of weed in the car. ;)

Edit: I can cope travelling with no smoking (cant smoke in the Mrs' car as she's a non-smoker).

Well mate you have a few options as I'm sure you are aware.
Right, quickest, possibly easiest and maybe cheapest is Sleasyjet/klm/ba.
If you really fancy a bit of driving then the ferries, Hull/Ijmuiden, Harwich/Hook or the drive on eurotunnel is the answer. All the ferries take either most of the day or overnight, which is quite a good way of maximising your day in Holland, arriving fresh in the early AM.
If you are driving say from the centre of Brum. Hull is 140 miles and the crossing is overnight and Ijmuiden has a couple of OK shops or a short hop to Haarlam or Amsters. Price depending on all the usual things ie. class of cabin, day of the week etc.
Harwich is 185 miles, same things although the crossing distance is less so the day ferry is an option and takes about 6 hours and not far to travel for Herb at the other side, Hook, Rotterdam or The Hague.
Folkstone/Eurotunnel would be about 200 miles, 40 minutes crossing time and I've not waited more than 20 minutes to be put on the train. From Calais, Breda is 170 miles, Den Bosch (recommended :)) is 195 miles and Eindhoven (also a nice place) is182 miles.
Happy motoring Boner :D
If you're after a few house points from the Lady then I would definitely recommend the overnight from Harwich with the "Captain Class" cabin option 8) , Comp. minibar, bowl of fruit and very comfortable.

Happy Trails.
What a long strange trip it is.

Sorry Boner you wanted the cheapest way by car, then that has to be Eurotunnel if the company are splashing some gas. Me and SS67 paid £44 out and £57 back for us and the car. We went about 0730 and returned 1515, so not much difference whatever time you travel.

Cheers dude, I did see a special offer of £20-25 each way via the tunnel the other day, I just need to convince the good lady that a day or 2 is viable.
