I am a bit of a wuss when it comes to Zoos, but I blubbed like a fool when I saw the poor polar bear, swinging from side to side, for what seemed like hours and hours... The lions were also in an incredibly small show cage. I was gutted to give this place my money. Longleat Safari in the uk is the way to go... Not enough room in Amsterdam for a decent zoo...

Great place to hang out in and the 7 greenhouses are warm. The butterfly house is cool. I've never been to the Zoo, not really my thing. Van Gogh is another favorite, especially on Friday nites when they have bands or DJs and drinking in the lobby. I've still got so much I want to see in Amsterdam. Next on my list is a bike ride down through Bos to the COBRA museum.

Just my view on the zoo.
I just visted Artis zoo in September this year, and i actually had tears in my eyes when i saw some of the animals, especial the bears and big cats.My wife was crying her eyes out when she saw the lions, they were driven completely mad.
a true sad sight indeed
Its might well be that some day you will only be able to see these great beasts in places like Artis zoo

I honestly don't agree Kermit, about the Artis zoo being one of the better zoos, not that your against cruelty!
To see that poor Polar Bear, black with dirt and grime, just swaying sadly from side to side was soul destroying. Watching a pride of Lions stuck in a tiny 'show cage' and seeing some of the other Big Cats in ridiculously small cages made me really cross! I am not one to keep my opinions to myself and asked multiple members of staff about the conditions I saw some of the animals living in... Now it could have just been the nature of the Dutch, but it seemed to me, no one really gave a shit.
Certain species need protection as man is destroying natural habitats at an unsustainable rate, and children deserve an opportunity to learn about this, in the hope they do a better job of looking after our planet than we have done. I just honestly believe there are better ways to do this than keeping animals in cruel conditions, especially when they are showing such obvious signs of stress and discomfort. Is that what we really want to show our children?
Heavy topic for a site based around coffeeshops!
