This is what Slimline told me yesterday:

[The forum was] "dragging too many resources from the server, its running out of memory, I can't afford to upgrade again."

"I had to switch it off to do memory diags on the server."

Maybe that means something to you. Networks are not my domain so I appreciate all of the work slimline does to keep it going for us.

Sounds like a plausible explanation. Given the volume of postings here I'd not be surprised if the BB uses up a fair bit of resources.

If it is strictly a memory issue then it should be an easy fix RAM is cheap....

Nothing worse when your favourite website is down.
I honestly think subscription membership will weed out the wasters.

Memory Upgrade

Post by slimline »

The server is suffering from lack of memory, running Apache and Qmail at the same time. (both grabbing resources). There is a solution, running NGINX which is far better at managing resources than Apache, the only problem is the server would be down for some considerable time. ( I do have some paying domains to consider).

Memory is cheap but the server is rented £65.00pm adding the memory will put the server price up to £83.00pm.

The solution is maybe to put my own server into the data centre, this would reduce the monthly cost down to about £40.00pm.

Alas I have a chenbro case and drives, but lack a decent motherboard and memory. It presently has a 3.00Ghz P4 processor and a 3ware sata raid controller, for those that know the dual core is well outdated and not suited to heavy loads. I built it as a standalone mail server nearly 4 years ago.

pulling me hair out, nuts going outside for a smoke

The server so far, hard drives are not shown, the 4 x 500GB sata's are in their boxes, just in case of damage. The drives can be run in many different raid modes. ( 1 to 5 )

Image

The case is 1U high very near 1.25in height.
Currently the case houses a Pentium 4 and 2GB of RAM. Not really fast enough for Apache/Qmail/MySql + The PHP scripts. Make an excellent home media server. !!

Image

The replacement m/b would have to be a Supermicro with a Intel i5 760 quad core with 4 or 8GB of RAM.
This choice for reliablity and speed.
Once the server is installed hopefully it wont have to be touched for 2 or 3 years.

WOW....   Your building that?...wow.
I bought a new wire-less mouse a couple of weeks ago and couldn't get it to work, nothing happening at all. Called my nephew over to fix it for me, kids know all this computer stuff....he came in and within two minutes he had turned one of the batteries around in the mouse and was on his way....
Hence, I am very impressed with your skills.
Please keep up the great work.
Will send some pelts from the colonies soon....  8)
If I don't see you no more in this world, I'll meet you on the next one.

Slimline's Phone

Post by slimline »

Sorry a bit off topic

Don't worry, my stepson had to setup my Blackberry phone, I told him phones are to make calls on. That's about the limit of my knowledge !!

Oh the pictures above were taken with the Blackberry

Slimline,

Where are you, and this server located?

Is a super micro mobo really required or would any ATX board suffice?

I don't have a lot of spare mobos lying around but I might be able to get you an older HP proliant DL360 server if the shipping to you is not too expensive.

Lamont,

I'm in Cheltenham UK, the server is in Maidenhead UK.

The Supermicro was/is the chosen motherboard because of their reliabilty.

The HP proliant DL360 sounds extremely interesting but I think shipping a hefty beast like that could be prohibitive. Many thanks for the kind offer.

I have looked on Ebay and found a machine that would suit us perfectly, and I was suprised to find the seller is only 2 miles from where I live.

Hi Twichaldinho,

I promise to donate 1/10 of the beastie + 2 x 500GB sata drives.

I also promise to set it up and deliver it to the data centre so hopefully we don't get any more down time.

Hi Lemming,

Thanks for your donation, we are beginning to move forward on this new server.

With the donations so far, we are 3/10ths of the way there.

Many thanks to those that contribute.
