Doubt that will ever be beaten :)
In the '80s I used to hitch from Berlin, which was free. Also one time I got a lift arranged through a Mitfahrzentrale, which is where drivers and passengers meet up for shared lifts in return for the passengers paying for their share of the petrol. When the driver got there, he said he couldn't be bothered to charge either me or the other passenger, so we had a free trip. Happy days.

Got a good deal on the Eurolines bus last time (£5+£4 admin one way, as I was returning via Belgium), but that's only worth it when it's cheap, and at the moment it costs more than the train and ferry, which is absurd. For that matter the train costs more than flying, but I hate flying. Actually, that's not true: I hate buying the ticket online and working out the baggage and getting to the airport and checking in and the security checks and sitting trapped next to someone singing rugby songs with their mates and the identikit food and the identikit staff and the identikit entertainment and getting my luggage back and getting into town from the airport. The only thing I really like about the whole experience is the actual moment of 'whee, I'm in the air!' But that doesn't last, and then it's back to the horror of the experience. So I'm taking the slow route from Harwich to Hoek van Holland, with a cabin for the outward journey, for £117 return. They've got new ferries since I last did it that way, and they're supposed to be spectacular. Well, Stena says so.

July trip, €188.50 R/T train with private sleeper and breakfast - in a box.
Aug trip, €177.25 same as above.
If fuel wasn't so expensive ($7.26gal), I would drive. (400mi/650km-5hrs)

Happy trails...

Free lift to airport or book a train from east croydon to Gatwick. Flight is easyjet. I flew there and back from 4th to 7th last week and got it for 55 return.
