Re: Check out phpBB3 forum

Post by Lemming »

All seems to be going reasonably well.

The version of the phpBB software that we were using was getting very dated and was no longer supported. We could have just moved to the latest version of phpBB2 but, while we were at it, it made sense to make the jump to phpBB3 because it has better anti-spambot capabilities.

This version has many new features for users, moderators and Lemmings. There are friends and foes, PM icons, more colours and the possibility of alternative styles if we get some set up in the future. Check out the User Control Panel (top right) to see all of the settings you can play with. The admin control panel has loads of settings for me to find my way around.

If you run a forum yourself and have any advice, please post here. I haven't found a setting to make links open in a new tab or window, for instance.

In addition to upgrading the software, we've also moved to a new domain. The forum is now available directly from coffeeshopdirect.com/forum (www.coffeeshopdirect.com still takes you to the main site). Not only is this a nicer name, it frees up Slimline's localinet.co.uk from its developing cannabis association

I've put some redirection programs on the old addresses so old links still work but it would be worth updating any favourites you might have set up.

I think some people made posts while we were switching over and lost them. Sorry about that  . Everything should be reasonably stable now. We've brought over as many avatars as possible. If you set up new ones now they should stay put.

I'm pretty sure you can't make links open in a new window. I would just make a few changes in the template used, or install a mod such as this one: http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/prime_links

Thanks for the advice on links in new window. I'll look into that.

I've fixed the smilies, incidentally. :D

Are you still having problems with logging in, etc? I've tweaked a couple of settings but, if you're still having trouble, can you tell me exactly what happens (or doesn't happen)?

Is it just me or does anyone else find some of the new smilies a bit creepy - the kind of oblong shaped faces, reminds me of aliens :? Perhaps I have just finally lost the plot...

Member Articulomortis has already set one up here: http://zippychat.com/room/1515. I just logged in.

I've applied the patch to make links open in a new tab or window. Thanks for your help on this hulldj and 08-420.

Regarding avatars, I know we lost a bunch a while ago, including those originally taken from the gallery, but I don't think we lost any more in the switch from phpBB2 to phpBB3. I can see hulldj's, Colina's, Rufus's and mine on this page for instance.

Regarding the smilies, yeah, I know what you mean. I might see if I can change them at some point.

I'm currently rebuilding the index so that the search will work properly. Apologies if that's making it a bit slow at the moment.

Do I take it that there are no login problems now then? If our only remaining issue is creepy smilies then I think we're doing quite well. :D

I just logged in for the first time on the new forum and had no prblems what so ever. It looks great, things in different places ...will take a bit to get used to I guess.
One question, in the 'Who's On-Line" I see something listed as a Yahoo[Bot]?? What the hell is that thing?... :?:
Thanks to you and Slimline for all the great work that this change over has entailed, you guys are 8) 8) 8) 8) (Those mean 'really cool' not creepy dudes in sunglasses.))
If I don't see you no more in this world, I'll meet you on the next one.

I just changed some cookie settings. Let me know if that helps with the auto-login.

Nobody uses that chat room then.

They're search engine spiders (really!). They crawl over the Web indexing what they find. They're what make the likes of Google and Yahoo work. They were always there, it's just that the old software didn't show them.

Excellent! I think that fixed a few problems.

For the techies - the cookie domain was set to the old location. I've now corrected it, which will probably make several things work better.

Is everything working better for everyone now?
