i think you are doing very well ... migrating a bit of software to a new version can be tough, but you have made the process relatively seamless ... well done

i know the new version makes things look and work differently from the phpBB2 version and it will take time for things to settle down, but i have one suggestion to make about one seemingly small item - The Golden Rule

in looking at the new organisation of forums and now sub-forums, i discovered The Golden Rule message written by Lemming in the following location -

Board index » Other » Off-Topic Subjects » Other » The Golden Rule

it seems to me that this is a fairly obscure location for an absolutely critical document ... imho The Golden Rule is the key to the ACD forum, it is the statement of a principle that makes this forum such a friendly place

may i suggest that the Golden Rule message be located at a much more prominent location, such as in the Community forum (as The Golden Rule governs our interactions) ... for example, the message could be a sticky in the FAQ forum ... in this case the location for the The Golden Rule message would be -

Board index » Community » FAQ » The Golden Rule

to me this is a much more distinguished location for such an important document

just a suggestion ...

once again, well done with the migration ...

Log in works.

Now it does not seem to register when I have read a post. So when I come back, it seems to have new posts in a category, but I read them already?

The search only covers the history since the forum went to phpBB3.

links don't open in a new tab, they open in the tab where ACD is/was.

Fair point. Maybe it should be in the forum template somewhere like the terms and conditions or the email sent to new members.

On the other hand, it's most likely to be applicable to Off-Topic and is only a last resort. To be honest, I don't think the Rule is what sets the standard for the forum, I think it's you guys that do that. I think you all lead by example.

I haven't experienced this problem. phpBB3 seems to have separate concepts of New and Unread posts. It also has a "Mark forums read" button (top right of main grid). Clicking that resets everything for you so you could try that first and then see what happens.

I rebuilt one of the indexes last night. It took hours! I've now switched over to that index so if you try it now it should be better. I'm currently rebuilding the other index.

I hacked the code to make it work the old way yesterday. Have you tried it recently?

I see that the polls in phpBB3 are a bit more sophisticated so that might be useful in the future.

A few of us were in the chatroom that Articulomortis set up (http://zippychat.com/room/1515) last night. I've now downloaded the mChat extension for phpBB3 and I'm considering installing it. It's a bit complicated to install so I want to be sure everything else is stable first. I'm also not sure if the server could take the strain.

I've tried it in Chrome, IE and Firefox and it worked in all of them. Which link did you try? Could it be a setting you have in Firefox? Is anyone else having this problem?

OK, I'm beginning to understand now. It seems that links inside URLs like this http://zippychat.com/room/1515 or this Chatroom successfully open in new tabs or windows whereas ones without URLs like this http://zippychat.com/room/1515 open in the same window or tab.

I don't know why this is at the moment. The two kinds of links are handled by a different bit of the program so it's quite conceivable (likely) that I've done something wrong.

Clicking all 3 of these links only opens in a new window.. not a new tab on my machine in I.E. 8. :( using Chrome it opens correclty in a new tab. :D

  However, its not difficult to right click the link and open in new tab yourselves if using I.E. ...

They all open fine in Firefox 3.6.

once i had an ugly exchange of messages that only stopped when i made the poster aware of the Golden Rule ... it was only because the Rule was there and documented within the forum that i had any effect as a individual member ... the document is the thing, the message; as a fellow member of the acd forum i am only the agent, the messenger

using ie7 all three links open in a new tab for me ...

isn't this behaviour set by the browser ???

on ie7 it is possible to set the behaviour via the following menus -

Tools >> Internet Options >> Tabbed Browser Settings

in any case i have been playing with posting links in messages and i have found that the software appears to be doing some kind of post-processing of the [url] and [img] type things in the message after the Submit button is hit

as an example see the message https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/forum/viewt ... 28#p169428

the new phpBB3 system produced the following -

[img]%20before%20the%20http://%20and%20[/img] after the .jpg

whereas in the original sentence the %20 things between the img and /img tags were actually real spaces ... the phpBB3 software has converted each space character into their octal equivalent, presumably so that the img tag structure was correct ... rather than writing out my text as given the software modified the text

no matter how i tried to repair the line the software edited my text after hitting Submit ... curious
