Dutch language questions

Claud from Amsterdam has kindly offered to help ACD users with translating Dutch to English and English to Dutch.
Post your questions for Claud here.

excellent idea, Lem!
I always find myself needing to ask for directions... like "how do I get to ... " or "Where is the ... "
But I would also have to know what they say back to me means! unless my bad accent reveals me a Brit, and they answer in English!
I think this idea of yours Lem, is a good addition the site!

"How do I get to..." - "Hoe kom ik bij..."
"Where is the..." - "Waar is de..."
But I wouldn't bother too much with Dutch, since it can be hard to pronounce for you. If you just speak slowly and easy english almost every dutch person wil understand you and prolly answer in english as well. I don't know anyone who doesn't understand english, only the really poor educated or elderly people in Holland don't understand it. It's not like france where barely anyone understands english. But I'm sure people always like it when you try to speak dutch and maybe they will help a bit.
Keep this going! i have a superb memory (when not stoned) & could put sentences together rather quickly,I know some words & can understand to a certain degree what people are saying if they speak slowly enough.

I always used to come unstuck when ppl stopped me and asked me the time.. 'hoe laat is het' is pretty easy to figure out.. but the dutch clock / telling the time system is completely illogical for me.. so I would just show them my watch.. was a lot easier!!

Another good one is, when asked anything by a dutch person, if you have no idea what they are saying, to reply:
ik spreek geen nederlands!
(ick sprake khane nay-der-lands)
(I speak no dutch)
I would also say that the 'g' in amsterdam is a hard g and it is softer in the eindhoven area (and prob other parts of holland).. so in a'dam the 'g' is pronounced like the 'ch' of loch .. like you were about to hawk up a gob of spittle or something
They will probably laugh.. and then if they are friendly, start up a conversation and you will gain a new friend...
