ive stayed here before, on princess ireenestraat or something?

about a 10min tram ride to the center if that, its a nice hotel and all but yeah its a bit out of the center.

park plaza is quite a nice hotel also although its quite 'old fashioned', think i stayed in a deluxe room or something was a nice big room with a nice bathroom and a rather comfortable bed! :P

I stayed at Schiphol CitizenM last April for one night. It is a stylish boutique hotel, very comfortable and modern. The bed is first rate.

It looks like Tram 5 drops you at the doorstep. I reckon that's a 25 minute ride from Central Station, 10-15 minutes from Leidseplein.

In years past when I had quite a few Holiday Inn points, I stayed at the Holiday Inn by the RAI. In that case it was the end of tram line 4. I didn't mind it so much, but you have to be aware when the last tram leaves whatever area you happen to be in when you are ready to go to the hotel. Last trams normally depart CS at 00:30. In any event, you could catch the night bus and get there as well. No way you want to walk that from Centrum....

Right, non smoking, so that's a deal breaker for many.

If I needed to stay at Schiphol, CitizenM would be my first choice, every time. The Dutch design firm Concrete has designed the CitizenM hotels, and have won many awards. I was so impressed I bought a book about Concrete at the Schiphol hotel.

Mrs. Lafe and I stayed at Park Plaza in November, across from Centraal Station. It is indeed a bit old fashioned, but easy to manage. RLD is across the street, Haarlemmerstraat a short walk, 420 is crawling distance, etc. Not a bad location at all, I would stay there again. I normally stay near Leidseplein.

had been looking at the amsterdam city, still looks a bit out the way though
think the no smoking policy has ruled it out despite it looking Soo.. cool
also fancied Inntel hotel but again no smoking
having never been to the Dam before its hard to make the right choice of location
am taking the girlfriend for her birthday so want it to be a great trip(surprise for her)
we are both 38, not into pubs and clubs
1. somewhere that smoking is allowed. Have decided this is a must
2. fairly central with places to get something eat close by
3. nice hotel with good clean rooms, not too small
we are going on 19th February for 4 days
am so tempted to tell her now so she can help me make the decission on accommodation but i would love to keep it a surprise.
the more i look the more confused i get, she normally deals with trips/hotels and always gets it right.
all help VERY gratefully received :?

bbdug -

For your first trip, I definitely recommend NOT staying outside the canal ring, i.e. past Prinsengracht UNLESS it is in the Leidseplein area. I think you will spend too much time figuring out the lay of the land and traveling about.

Trust me on this, I am speaking from experience on this one :-) The last thing you want is to be shit-faced knackered in the RLD and realize the last trams have left, needing to get out to RAI or WTC, etc. It's far enough to walk from RLD to Leidseplein but not a deal breaker (unless you take the wrong street at Muntplein :-)

Check the list of 'smoking hotels' in this forum section. As others have mentioned, an apartment may be your best bet.

You may not be able to reconcile 'smoking required' with 'nice, not too small rooms' unless it is an apartment. Also consider you won't be spending much time in the hotel, if you do it right :-)

I like Rookies (Hotel Uptown) near Leidseplein. A couple of their rooms are spacious enough, not really like "American" hotel rooms for the most part but pretty good considering. Beware, though, it is possible to get a 'double' which is pretty small.

park plaza is ok, catered towards the business traveller/ older couple/ family tho in my opinion. I smoked when staying there but didnt feel very comfortable doing it.

edit - ignore me was talking about the park plaza VONDELPARK
