UK to DAM no passport, FERRY POSSIBLE ???

hi guys
a freiend wants to come to dam but he doesnt have a passport and doesnt really want to have to get one as he has a phobia of flying, and skint !!
he thinks he can go by ferry using his driving licence...
does anyone know if he is correct ??? anyone tried it?
i think he needs it, definately
looked on net but getting mixed answers,

I would very , very , much doubt it - all passports are now scanned (and tracked) in any case on departure and arrival in the UK - plus , legally you need photo ID in the Netherlands.

i think the only way you might go is through eurotunnel both times i used them ddnt look and friend uses eurotunnel to do baccy runs and have got away with not showing passports most times . but its not 100% though and i wouldnt try it without having a passport

leaving uk without passport may be a problem but returning is no probs....thousands do it every week

ive heard of people using driving licenses to cross border, it will be up to the french authorities in dover if theyl except it, only air travel is logged on databases at the mo, if your friend brings other id, photocopy of birth certificate, ni card, health card, it might make for a stronger case,
otherwise tell em to stop be a tight arse & get a passport, if hes to skint to get a passport then hes only gonna be sponging off you for the whole trip

I would have an in-date passport if i were him,Customs are like robots these days
