They should ban the scooters from the bike lanes, they ride them so arrogantly and have no respect for the humble cyclist.

I had electric over 420, they go alot quicker than 25mph especially one up , pretty rapid and you piss around town. I was plodding on half power the last day though incase the fucker run out, great fun and easily the best way to get round and get right out of town.

Deffo having one every trip, fuck the cost, your on holiday

@Boner, i was respectful of all cyclists and traveled at there pace until it was safe to overtake, it was the people on foot that get under your wheels.

We were told they are going to be banned from the bike lanes in the future when we rented ours last week .

If you rent for a week it's 140 euros and they are gas. It says they go 25 km/h which is kinda slow (15 mph), but I guess you wouldn't want to go too fast considering you'd be in a foreign country and possibly unfamiliar with driving in a city like Amsterdam. I am seriously going to have to look into this further. Sounds kinda fun.

Be sure and call them or make a reservation prior to just showing up like we did as they were nowhere to be found. Waited around until around 11:00 at which time we walked down to De Clercqstraat finding another place that wouldn't take a CC for deposit which kind of sucked but in the end got the job done.

Thanks for the advice. I got so excited at the prospect of riding a scooter that I didn't really think about the fact that I'll be there in mid-December and now I'm wondering if it's even practical as far as weather and road conditions. I still think it would be fun provided I dressed for it.

Make sure you request one with a windshield, very important IMO .

Yeah, definitely. I've been in contact with the guy who runs this place and I think I might do it, but I'll probably just do half day rentals for 25 euros. You get to keep it from 10-5:30 (open to close) with a half day rental and don't have to worry about it getting stolen overnight or having a dead battery if the temp drops really low.

I would consider the longer rental period. How long are you going to be there? If 5+ days, it makes sense (IMO) to rent it for the entire time as the rate gets pretty cheap. If you are there for 7 days, it's a really good deal at 140,00Euro or 20,00Euro/day. Plus if you really enjoy it (and I know you will) do you really want to waste some of your time each day going back there to re-rent it?

I suppose the dead battery could be an issue during November (you're going for the Cup, right?) but the guy where we rented from told me to just give him a call if any problems arose.

I wouldn't worry much about it getting stolen AS LONG AS YOU ARE PERSISTENT AT LOCKING IT DOWN EVERY TIME YOU PARK IT!!! The chain & lock that was included was ridiculous to say the least and as long as I found a tall pole, I didn't worry about it getting stolen.

Have fun!!! I am so glad my wife made me do this as we were riding the metro for the first week and this was definitely a better way to see the City (made it all the way from the Jordaan to the Zoo!), we had done the bikes in the past but my knee was toast and I simply could not do it this trip.

Actually, I am going to be there from Dec. 15-24 (9 days) so it will be after the Cup, which is fine with me as it will be less crowded. The 7+ day rental is a better deal like you said - I'm just worried about the scooter being out in the cold all night and then having trouble starting it the next morning at 8 or 9am!

I know I'd have a boatload of fun driving around on a scooter! I've done the tram/bus thing and it's a pain trying to figure out which tram and what time and then waiting around, plus it doesn't take you literally to the doorstep of your destination. The bike I rented last year from Frederic-rent-a-bike was cool, but took a lot of energy peddling around 12 hours a day so the scooter sounds like it would be the best bet provided it wasn't raining or snowing and I remember to watch out for ice.

Their scooters do have windshields which will help. With each day that passes I talk myself into it more and more!

I have a Honda Metropolitan that I ride often. Yes, a windshield will make a big difference.
Be sure to have a good pair of gloves. Your hands are always right out there in the wind and will want
all the protection from cold they can get. Also if you do fall the first thing to hit the ground
is your hands. The natural instinct is to use your hands to break the fall.

Thanks for the advice. I checked and all of their scooters have windshields. I asked the guy about starting them in the morning in the cold and he said I shouldn't have any problems, but not to expect them to start on the first try. The place is about a 20 minute walk from Hotel Abba or an 8 minute tram ride. Hopefully I won't wipe out on any icy patches!

what they say
No extra charge for kilometers driven. if you go doing 100+kms a day for 7 days they aint going be extra charges? since you can zip around the country at 25kms and getting to rotterdam is 90+kms!!denhelder 80+/- kms ... the beach (they say 19kms) but.. more like 30kms < just there is 60km return!?
