Moving to Amsterdam? Ever thought seriously about it?

Post by wietroker »

Hey all,

If you've ever thought seriously about it then I need your help. I hope it is OK to post this here as I am helping out my fellow tokers.

I have a book I wrote (pdf format) that you may have seen banners for on my other site, and I need some comments on it that I can include on the main site for the visitors to read to get an idea of what is in it.

Site is http://www.movetoholland.com

I am willing to give free review copies to the first 5 people who PM me. Make sure to give me your email address so I can send you the book as an attachment.

Some conditions:
  • Please only do this if you have genuinely thought about moving (even if only for a moment). Because otherwise the book is useless to you, if you have zero interest. If you live here, please don't ask for a review copy.
  • Also, I need your feedback within one day. Don't worry, it's an easy read and you can just scan it. If you have trouble reading then please don't respond. I recommend quickly spending 5 minutes scanning it and writing me a quick reply. Then you can read the book later at your convenience.
  • I don't need a whole page of feedback. Just 2 or 3 sentences is fine.
  • Please do not stick this on a torrent site or anything. I bust my arse writing this book and hopefully it can pay my server bills for my other site.
  • Please don't PM me if you have 1 or 2 posts. I don't know enough about you to trust you enough.
Cheers

I will fact check it for 500 euros :D :D

Kidding, I wish you the best of luck. Curious as to how you deal with immigration from a legal standpoint (as in your own liability for whatever you write). I would tread very careful there.

I dont know if anyones taken wietroker up on his offer or not but if you're are thinking about making the move I highly advise you do, he's wriiten a very comprehensive book that's very well set out and easy to follow, I've thought about it a lot over the last X amount of years so I asked him for a look and he's certainly taught me a lot more than I knew, I'd be interested too hear how someone from outside the EU thats thinking about it thinks of this, maybe Balou is interested as I know he's making the move?

Yes I have but I live in London, which is almost next door anyway. Given the right job circumstances maybe but it's not as if I'm deprived of anything.

It's the small town calm with plenty of metropolis fun would be it's biggest attraction.

Am *finally* moving on Friday.....they say the three most stressful things you can do is move house, get married and look for a new job, who's bright idea was it that I do all three at once, am like the living dead at the minute, going to need a week off just to sleep :-)

I am being 'tapped up' for a job in A'dam / Den Haag. I turned the opportunity down 2 years ago but with the current government looking to slash jobs in my field as the price for saving the 'deserving' bankers at the public expense, I am going to reconsider when I am over there next week.
On the face of it the romantic in me says 'this is the chance for that apartment overlooking one of the grachts that look so gorgeous as you walk around at night' the realist says it will be very different .
If I move on it I'll apply/buy your tome Wietrocker - Boner's recommendation is good enough for me !

Ive thought about it! maybe not amsterdam but somewhere else in the NL or even belgium,But *drums* finding somewhere to stay that doesnt totaly clean you out each month would be a problem i think :(,I feel i have the steele to survive there for sure but still it wouldnt be easy! first of all finding a decent job as without that you wouldnt stand a chance,& secondly learning dutch is a must as far as work goes in some places! & i cant blame them really,Personaly my dutch is basic so i would be needing classes! yet more cash again,If anyone is thinking it over & reading this i would suggest you save up for a year or two as you will need hardcore funds! dont take this lightly as you do hear of the horror stories,Also maybe try & learn some dutch where you are just now as speaking english there all the time isnt on with some people ,& 3rd of all finding a reputable landlord that wont try & mess you about or worse still rip you off! thou people here could help,Maximum respects to the people who have made the leap thou! next to getting married its the biggest step anyone could ever take in MHO,KD.

Over the past year I've been doing some research into moving to Amsterdam, unfortunately the more I looked, the less I liked. In short, too expensive for my tastes.

As for the website, I don't mean to sound critical or anal, but Holland is not The Netherlands, it's part of it (North Holland and South Holland are two provinces). It's like referring to California as the US. Also, drop the mild profanity, some may deem this a turn-off. Food for thought.

Good luck and I hope you sell millions of copies.

Hey thanks for the comments and help so far.

Yes, I know Holland is not the right word but many Dutch even refer to it as Holland when they speak English. You can think of it as the English word for Nederland.

Definitely life here is tough if you are not cash rich, the costs of living are quite ridiculous and similar to London, if not more. Dutch red tape does not help either.

When I came here, I thought I might eventually move out of Amsterdam. But having been here almost 2 years, I find Dutch culture strangely alien to me. I prefer Amsterdam. The two are about as different as New York City is to picket fenced American suburbia.

So much truth in this post (-:

As for cost of living, well Amsterdam is no worse than many of the great cities of the world. I think finding a decent and centrally located apartment in say (for example) Chicago or Paris will cost you more than here. My point is, yes its expensive, but its one of the leading cities of the world, so its understandable.
