You've hit the nail on the head, most of the time it's ages between hearin' all the slang you used to use everyday.
It's now all the same, a lot of the stuff you'd hear in "London", you'll hear in "Edinburgh". But the "Scottish" accent for the most part still gives you the chance to have a conversation in a crowded place without mostly anybody else havin' a clue.
A word of warnin' though.. i once was in "The Dolphins" and spotted a girl i knew from workin' with her and after doin' the old double take, i was about to ask her how she was enjoyin' the coffeeshops, when i heard her "American" accent. Slightly releaved, as i didn't want to have the, "So, you take a 'toke', you sly dog you" conversation, i collected the drinks and headed down stairs.
The 'Tokin' buddy had himself planted on one side of a couch with a girl on the opposite rollin' a number. So i get him to budge up, sit down and start to tell him about this "big darlin' redheid, who's the spittin' image... and i'll tip you the wink if she comes doon the stairs", which moments later she does... walks straight over and sits beside her pal who has just finished rollin' that joint.
I just kept smilin' and chattin' with the 'token' buddy, layin' on the slang thicker and speedin' up the conversation a couple of warp factors to deter any eavesdroppers, givin' it, "what's the chances of that happenin'.. i thought the rest o' the work was gonna walk in behind her.... and how i really fancied that girl from my work and thought, 'God' had decided to give me an even break for a change!!!".... or words to those effect But the girls opposite seemed to be takin' a lot of interest in our side of the very small table.... probably in wonder of what language we speak and tryin' to guess the country So i politely give a nod and smile and say hello.......at which, the object of my desire says, "Our dads were based in "Scotland" for 5 years and we lived there and can understand everythin' yous are sayin', 'Ken'?"
Ah... that 'God' really has it in for me and must wet himself at the situations i get myself and my pal in.... after a few, well aren't we the lucky (spammy ) ones and what are the chances of that, sittin' down in a coffeeshop in "Amsterdam" and the "American" girls across from you, understand what you were sayin', when you were gloatin' about the size of that "big redheided, darlin's" chest.
God bless "America", cause after a few moments of awkward silence, the whole atmosphere changed and all concerned seen the funny side of it, with the conversation just flowin' along.
Very nice girls, very switched on... last we ever seen of them

Ha ha classic mate the thick Scottish accent does come in handy sometimes , pity you found girls that know Scotland cause the Scots get a good welcome where ever we go with "oh we like your accent"
