Becoming Dutch to be made harder, dual nationality ruled out

Post by Balou »

Monday 28 March 2011

Everyone who wants to adopt Dutch nationality will soon have to give up their original nationality if that is legally possible, home affairs minister Piet Hein Donner said on Monday.

At the moment, for example, people who marry a Dutch citizen can keep their original nationality if they decide to become Dutch as well.

'Dutch citizenship is the crown on participation and integration into society,' Donner said in a briefing, outlining plans to toughen up the rules on becoming Dutch. The new measures were included in the coalition agreement.

Language tests

The minister is also planning to introduce compulsory language tests for everyone. Some people are currently exempt.

New Dutch nationals will also have a family income of at least the minimum wage and show that they have at least two years work experience or have some sort of professional qualification.

The minister has opened an internet portal where everyone can comment on the proposed changes.

In four weeks time, the draft legislation will be sent to the council of state for its assessment.

It has always been a dream of mine to re-enter the US as an undocumented worker being a Dutch citizen later in life.. Crossing the Rio Grande at night seems romantic, although dangerous and costly. but in all seriousness, thanks for the info. What's the German policy?

met vriendelijke groet..

I wanted to get a Dutch passport down the line but it does look like that will never happen now. I have no problem with integration, but I will not give up my American passport. If American does decide to do so it's easier said than done. I just watched a documentary about that just last week. Besides I don't want to give up what little I might get in SSI when I do reach retirement. I have not a clue what the requirements are in Germany.

Peace,
Balou
P.S. - If you ever need that south of the border thing done, a friend of a friend might be able to help 8)

@Bong... Not that I'm not proud. For me, I live in L.A. So after 26 years a change of lifestyle is needed. It's plasticized here. 8) 8) Phony would be a step up. Notnomore and the surrounding areas are a little more raw and authentic.. Even if it is Appalachia..

@Balou I want the same thing as you so lets hope this doesn't pass..  Dualzies all the way!  If not we'll talk to your friend.

met vriendelijke groet..

~Ian

P.S. I will most likely marry a Dutch citizen so this is very helpful. I'm just not into rubbing your balls every time you find something intelligent, funny, important, Etc Etc.. You should know I appreciate your posts by now.

Actually, the US makes it very easy to get a second or third nationality, they don't care anymore. Theoretically it used to be a problem, but even 20 years ago no one cared.

Actually, giving up your US citizenship is next to impossible! They do not want to lose the tax break!

Je vergeet dat meer dan beetje Nederlands ik spreek... Je brengt jijzelf in verlegenheid.. Zijn je ouders neef en nicht???

I'm letting you know now, it's been Done.. You know I'm neither ugly nor stupid and even men with those attributes manage to get dates.. So the fact that I speak conversational dutch has been welcomed more than not.

BTW Balou was talking about The Dutch forcing you to give up your American citizenship not the other way around.

met vriendelijke groet..

~Ian

P.S. Nice and helpful in your PM's, I usually back you, and then you bust my balls... Typical beginnings to any long term friendship...
