Dangler Almost live April 7th to 27th
Wednesday Morning five Am.
I’m awakened by the sound of the LAPD kicking in my neighbors door. Apparently he smoked a little too much meth and went all sick house, creating a disturbance. And now half of LA’s finest is just outside my door.
Normally this would be a rude awakening, but today I appreciate the early wake up call. More time to pack and prepare for Twenty days in Amsterdam.
11 am
Take the subway to the LAX fly a way. Pick up boarding pass and power through security. As soon as I reached my gate I notice that something isn't right. My flight was going to be delayed. Apparently some flights to India were cancelled and KLM was accommodating the stranded passengers. The flight was now packed. Then my blood ran cold. People were getting bumped. The first people getting the cut seemed to be single passengers.
I noticed that there was an unusual amount of disabled people in the roped off area waiting to board. One thing that I’ve learned in my travels is that there are two types of people that never get bumped, people with small children and the disabled.
I had to be decisive.
Quietly, I slide under the rope to the area where the physically challenged are sequestered and take a seat.
They started pre boarding. KLM attendants start putting people in wheelchairs and lining them up in the tunnel.
One of the female attendants approached me and asked: ‘Sir, do you need a chair?’
‘No, I think I can make it’
‘Well then, your going to have to wait over there’
She said pointing to the area with all the people with an uncertain travel future.
One of my talents as an actor, is that I can sweat on cue.
Shakily, slowly I struggle out of the seat.
‘Sir, are you sure you don’t need a chair?’
‘No I think I can make it’
‘It’s no trouble, we can get you a chair’
How far did I want to take this? I decided on a more subtle approach .
‘I'd rather not, I’ll just be slow. I don’t mind waiting till everyone else boards’
‘Come with me sir, I’ll get you on’
Now I was committed to this charade. I hobbled timidly behind her, handed over my boarding pass and entered the tunnel to the plane. It was filled with about ten people in wheelchairs. My guide address’s the crowd.
‘Everyone, please move to the left side.'
A clear path opens all the way to the entrance. It’s show time. No turning back now.
Limping and hugging the right side wall of the tunnel, I make my way to the empty plane. The whole time I’m passing a captive audience in wheelchairs, watching me with fascination , or was it contempt?
After assisting me to my seat, I’m offered a drink.
And the Oscar goes to……………….
Soon we are in the air. And with the help of some magical tail winds, we arrive on time.
9:30 AM Amsterdam
Customs.
Grab Bag.
Get train ticket.
Central station.
Bag in tow, I head up Damrak.
One thing about this trip that has given me a little anxiety, has been my accommodations. I’ve stayed just about everywhere in Amsterdam from the Kras to the Old Nickel. This year I booked my room with the Hotel Sipermann. Once again something just didn’t feel right.
To be continued………………………………......................
