Of course there are good restaurants. But Ron, I cannot see how you can say the general quality of restaurant and (especially) grocery store food is at a level even close to France, Belgium or Germany.....Uncle Ron wrote:Looking at the PIC once again, I would have to say that everything but the mushrooms and slice of tomato has to go.![]()

As I stated, if people took a little time to (re)search, along with venturing outside the Centrum, they will find many good/great places to eat. It all comes down to what one wants. Simple really, too easy even. Anything else is lazy whining. Just saying...

Re: is amsterdam the worst place in europe for food???
I have only been to Amsterdam in Europe and coming from the U.S. I thought the food was subpar mostly, but I also suffer from acid reflux and hate all the curry and super spicy stuff most places serve....Burger Bar and and DeKlos and wok to wak were good as a matter of fact I thought Burger bar was one of the best burgers I have had anywhere equal to five guys here in the USA.
One thing was that I wish I had of tried one of the argentinian steak houses, any of these any good?

The majority are alright but La Brasa down Haarlemmerstraat (might be Haarlemmerdijk) is quality and on par with Wilma & Alberts in Haarlem (even though I hear W&A aren't as good as they used to be).weedhog wrote:One thing was that I wish I had of tried one of the argentinian steak houses, any of these any good?

I wouldnt say it has the worst food! no way,Ive eaten at tons of places in amsterdam over the years & the joints ive ate at have always been good for quality & price! & the portions arnt small either in most of um,I guess it depends on where you are from really! i live in a country that deep fries mars bars & pizzas so anything is an improvement know what i mean
,But yea if you from the states "for example" i doubt the burger bar will top say "uncle joes" or some superb steakhouse like that you may find in your home city,KD.

I can't say that the general overall quality is at the level of others, mainly because I don't have the extensive experience as you (and others) living there. I have gone to a few AH's and have seen them in various states, mostly confusion.
Moving on...
Not that I really care, but I have wondered a time or two why there aren't more Dutch style food vendors. There are a few herring vendors throughout the city, but that's about it, or at least what I've noticed.
Conclusion of sorts:
I agree with the premise that Amsterdam isn't a mecca for cuisine, not even close. But to state that there aren't any good places to eat, regardless of location, simply put, is ridiculous.
Happy dining...

I was warned quite some time ago that going to AH or similar grocery stores could and usually is a crap shoot, esp. for fresh produce. Along with the warning came a few suggestions - open air markets, fresh fish vendors, esp. in Chinatown, etc...

Agreed! You cannot have it all. Paris has better food, but its bigger, more expensive, more intensive. Amsterdam has some great Chinese, Thai, etc food, especially around China town.
As for Dutch style food vendors Ron, I wonder what they would serve from trucks besides herring and febo-like food?? LOL. What Amsterdam needs are some Taco carts!
Next time you are here, lets get some grub.
Re: is amsterdam the worst place in europe for food???
The best food I found in AMS was served at a little known spot called Hestia's.....
Marco has been there and I think he would agree, although the seating is not the sturdiest..

I can't even remember eating properly while in Amsterdam think I just grabbed a huge bag of wine gums from somewhere. Strangely I do remember my very first meal. Bit bad cause I can't remember the name of the hostal but it was next to Hill Street Blues. They gave a free a breakfast in the morning sausages toast that kinda set up, I remember it being so tasty and delicious I nearly fainted.
Seriously can't remember eating a proper meal while there, must have done. complete mad one - just tripped out thinking about that.
