harwich ferry

For old times sake I decided to get the Harwich-Hoek overnight ferry and boy how it's changed in two decades. It seems a foot passenger is almost a rare eccentric and I was subjected to some ludicrous questioning by Harwich customs like I was some teenage raver (again very nostalgic). As the traffic is not great it is nothing compared to the rigmorale airports subject law-abiding taxpayers to (or the nuisance UK Border Agency is making of itself in the Brussel Eurostar terminal lately).
You are allocated an extremely comfortable single cabin and enjoy a greedy fry up in the morning. What has changed is most of the passengers are drivers and there is not the drinking party atmosphere of yesteryear. The bar tenders look like they want you to go off to bed after midnight.
You can still be in 'dam before 10 am much more relaxed than some awful early morning flight. I'll probably do this option again.
