Signatures you would like to have, but are toooooo long

Post by A Leprechaun »

50 characters which count even the blanks as a character is depriving us of some gems,eg

“if you can’t eat it, drink it, smoke it, or snort it…then fuck it!”
Mad Sweeney.

Of course he is a Leprechaun and maybe that is why I am flagging it up.

Plus if anyone comes across an avatar with a leprechaun smoking a spliff can you let us know, but none of those little cherubic top of the morning ones.

There's nothing stopping you from adding something to each of your posts. The point at which you get bored with adding it is probably the same point as people get bored with reading it.

I think jokes or words of wisdom lose their impact if they're repeated endlessly. Often someone will post several times in one thread and, if a joke, graphic or whatever is repeated in every post, it just becomes clutter.

Having said that, I'm open to persuasion. If you think I should make the signature limit longer, post your argument here.

I would imagine imho that if you allow for signatures in the first face, then you should have enough characters available for a reasonable enough length of a quote.

Sometimes you can also identify with another poster by his signature, and obviously the reverse is true as well.Plus one mans clutter is another mans treasure

Good points but that could be an argument for disallowing signatures altogether.

As I recall, the reason I limited it to 50 characters years ago was to stop people from repeating huge graphics in every post. When people did that it could overpower threads and make them very difficult to follow.

The 50 character limit was the only control available in phpBB2 but, having looked at the control panel, I see phpBB3 provides a lot more variations. It's now possible to restrict graphics, font sizes, number of links and so on independently of the overall signature length.

As you'll have gathered, I'm no fan of signatures but if everyone else likes them then so be it. I'll set up a poll to canvas opinion on the subject.

Could the same not be applied to Avatars, maybe there is an argument suggesting that these are boring to look at as well

Censorship by editing or restricting people to fully express themselves imho is just as bad as censorship in any form.If I want to have a signature surely I should be allowed the freedom to express that. What comes next then? If I want to express myself fully whether using an avatar,a post or a signature then I reckon I should be allowed to do this in any form I want.

Sure I recognize the fact that you have created this forum, but have you not created this forum so people can express themselves in a form of their own choosing.

It's just a bit o fun to add onto posts for goodness sake! Just play with the words and make what you wanna say fit the limit!

Eg

Dope but no money's better than money but no dope! (50 chars)

or

I'd rather have # but no $ than $ but no #! (even less! lol!)
