Horse Meat
apologies to those who are squeemish. but yes i want to ask about horse steaks.
im a concious meat eater. much in the same way a vegetarian (like my missus) correctly claims if you feel like you shouldnt eat a dog, then why should you feel its acceptable to eat a sheep. i work in reverse. i buy my meat from the farmers markets, and i try to stick to free range and ethical slaughter meat. i'm no saint i know, a few beers and my ethics are easily broken, burgers kebabs etc., its something i really am working on.
so any way
i had horse steak once when i was a kid when my parents took me over to holland. i remeber it was delicious. id love to try it again. ive been led to believe thats its a common meat/dish in holland.
i have been told that the key to finding horse meat on dutch menus is when its called 'steak nederland' or something to that affect, its not actually stated as horse... is this true?
can anyone recommend somewhere decent?
cheers

Horse is brilliant, I love it. Have never seen it in Amsterdam, but often in Belgium. Post up if you find some.

Sorry, I'm from the US - we don't eat horses here! Well, maybe some people do, but I never would.
Re: Horse Meat
True, its quite rare to eat, but the US exports quite a bit of horse meat to Europe.DazedandConfusedinOR wrote:Sorry, I'm from the US - we don't eat horses here! Well, maybe some people do, but I never would.

Agriculture in Quebec seems to prosper under the prohibitions from the United States. There is a thriving horse meat business in Quebec; the meat is available in most supermarket chains. Horse meat is also for sale at the other end of the country, in Granville Island Market in downtown Vancouver where, according to a Time magazine reviewer who smuggled it into the United States, it turned out to be a "sweet, rich, superlean, oddly soft meat, closer to beef than venison". Horse meat is also available in high end Toronto butchers and supermarkets. Aside from the heritage of French cuisine at one end of the country and the adventurous foodies of Vancouver at the other, however, the majority of Canada shares the horse meat taboo with the rest of the Anglosphere. This mentality is especially evident in Alberta, where strong horse racing and breeding industries and cultures have existed since the province's founding. << OH CANADA!

Actually, horse slaughter has been outlawed in the U.S. for a number of years now. It's actually leading to problems with starvation and abandonment of horses in the U.S. These days the horses have to be shipped to Canada or Mexico for slaughter. Perhaps the horse meat is imported from there?Marco wrote:True, its quite rare to eat, but the US exports quite a bit of horse meat to Europe.DazedandConfusedinOR wrote:Sorry, I'm from the US - we don't eat horses here! Horse is commonly eaten in Switzerland and is available in the grocery stores here. I love horses, so I don't eat them, so I can't tell you what it tastes like, although I've been told that it tastes much like bison, which tastes like ostrich, which tastes like venison. All animals that I don't love and find delicious.

The myth is that chevalier (sp) horse meat, was popularised in France after the retreat from Moscow in 1812 / 1813 when the starving remnants of Napoleon's army would slice frozen meat off living horses as they went along*
