Ferries

Post by Couch »

Or is it ferrys? Regardless, I understand there are a couple of ferries that leave from the north side of CS. I also believe some of them are free. Where can I find more info on which ones are free and where they go to? I'm looking to do something different and get out of the the center this trip, so if the ferries are free, it sounds like a perfect opportunity to see some other part of the city I've never been to.

you were correct the first time ... ferries is the plural of ferry

there are five ferries shown on the map boner suggested: Ijplein, Buikslotenwegveer, NDSM-wegveer, Houthavenveer, and Distelwegveer

i have never been on the last two, but they are on my list of things-to-do, i don't think they run as often as the others

if you take the short Ijplein ferry, it is a short stroll along the ij river to the wilhelmina dok cafe where you can have a coffee and an apple dessert or maybe a full lunch

http://www.wilhelmina-dok.nl/

if you take the very short Buiksloterwegveer ferry, you can take a long stroll alongside the north holland canal on a path set in open grassy areas and trees, it is a very pleasant walk, there is a windmill to head for if you have the interest and the legs

if you take the NDSM-wegveer ferry, you will have the longest trip (ie 15-20 minutes) and you will see the ends of canals, a side of amsterdam that you cannot see from the land, and loads of other stuff like noah's ark and a russian submarine ... when you arrive at NDSM, you can visit the skate park built in the top left-hand corner of a large warehouse and watch the latest tricks by the local kids, there is also a cafe not far from the warehouse (can't remember the name at the moment, but it is a very hippie/60s-type name)

I was planning to take the ferry over and visit CS Ooievartje after the Voyagers t&t on the 9th. It's pretty close to the noord-side ferry dock, so not a lot of walking.

Most of my AMS fold-out maps display the ferry routes.

You can take a bike on the ferry, it's actually quite quiet so it would be a good place for someone to experiance cycling in Holland as well.
