So do you know other cities near Maas where the ban does not apply? What about Geelen, Kerkrade, Heerlen? Thx.

I was there, yes its real. I drove through there last Wednesday on my way to Germany from Amsterdam. I stopped in Eindhoven at Pink to relax and buy a couple g's just to be safe. Went on to Maastricht and stopped by Heaven 69. Couldn't get in with my U.S. Passport.

Just an assumption but, they probably reached an agreement by cutting out a percentage of the "tourists" and not their bread and butter (Belgians/Germans). Also, unless the local government is just swimming in loot, they saw the monetary hit that they would take by killing it all together. Just my thoughts though. Politics at work.

As a one time frequent visitor to Maastricht, I am curious if they would allow me entry given that I have a US Passport with German Residency (documented). The rational side of me is saying not to bother going because they will probably refuse me entry. On the other hand, my interest is peaked to see if they would recognize my German residency and allow me to enter. If there was (is there?) a significant population of expats residing (documented) in Germany or Belgium and members of this forum, I would suggest we all get together for a "potential" T&T in Maastricht at Maxcy's (my personal fave).
Regardless, I will be visiting the area (mainly Aachen, DE) in December and may take a slight detour to Maastricht. Hmm, I wonder if Maastricht has a Christmas Market? Pause............................................... Just Googled, they do. :D

Laters...

"But the influx of drug tourists has placed a major strain on the city's 120,000 residents with frequent traffic jams, nocturnal disturbances and an increase in aggressive drug pushers harassing tourists." (http://www.medindia.net)

I've frequented Maastricht often because it is quieter than Amsterdam and I am surprised that their are the problems described above. Never met any other Londoners for example even though it is only a train ride from Brussels Midi and means you don't have faff around at shitty airports to get there.

I wandering if the Belgian and German only move is a tacit playing of the race card aimed at French nationals with North African origins.

I remember reading the same passage that you quoted and thinking the very same thing. Living here in the U.S. just outside of D.C., there are neighborhoods I don't feel safe in so I don't go into them. But, in Europe, in all honesty I have never been anywhere I did not feel safe. The traffic issue is kind of a moot point as well, the roads are as wide as a typical American driveway in the city, not to mention the fact that you can't even get to most places in Maastricht in a car anyway or it just doesn't make sense to try. It's easier to walk everywhere. Out of the dozens of times I have been to Maastricht I have been in two maybe three traffic jams and one was on the A2 due to an accident.

And the so called "aggressive drug pushers", really? They don't give me shit, I just ignore them or say no thanks and that is that. Most of them look like they are about 18 and weigh about a buck o five soaking wet so its not like they are going to mug you.

But, I am speaking in relative terms. What isn't a big deal to me here in the U.S. may be a big deal to the people in those small cities. I read an article that cited a rise in criminal activity. A crime wave in Maastricht could be they had 2 rapes instead of 1 in the past year, which would be a slow day in SE D.C.

It sucks because Maastricht was in such a convenient spot when I am in Germany and Belgium for work.

From personal observation, Maastricht is typically like most old European towns and cities, not designed to handle automobile traffic. These places are more suitable for horse drawn carriages and the like. As for the A2, another failure on the part of the Dutch. One suggestion - BYPASS! To end a highway on one side of town and then start it back up on the other, and not to forget - situated at the busiest border crossing between The Netherlands and Belgium? They wonder why there is a traffic problem?
And then there are the piss-ants who seem to come out only from dusk to dawn. Most of these little shits are second generation Dutch citizens. Use your imagination... As for the rest of them, small town kids who go to the big city for fun and adventure, and sometimes get into a little trouble.
I keep thinking about this ban and it still makes no sense. One possible explanation (warped as it sounds) is that the City/Province/Country is passively going to prove that the Germans and Belgians ARE in fact the ones causing most of the problems. The other shoe drops, and the ban is extended to Germans and Belgians with little or no fanfare. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. There are many ways to skin a cat, if one is so inclined...

If they ban everyone except Dutch citizens, so be it. It's their country, it's their choice.
Moving on, next...
