Occupy Wall Street

Post by ed the head »

'The Occupy Wall Street protest grows daily, spreading to cities across the United States. “We are the 99 percent,” the protesters say, “that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1 percent.”

The response by the New York City Police Department has been brutal. Last Saturday, the police swept up more than 700 protesters in one of the largest mass arrests in U.S. history. The week before, innocent protesters were pepper-sprayed in the face without warning or reason.'

And this won't stay in the US ... it'll be spreading to Europe and eventually elsewhere. And it's about f*cking time ;-)

We are the 99%!

Occupy Wall Street: Part 2

PAUL KRUGMAN

'There’s something happening here. What it is ain’t exactly clear, but we may, at long last, be seeing the rise of a popular movement that, unlike the Tea Party, is angry at the right people.

When the Occupy Wall Street protests began three weeks ago, most news organizations were derisive if they deigned to mention the events at all. For example, nine days into the protests, National Public Radio had provided no coverage whatsoever.

What can we say about the protests? First things first: The protesters’ indictment of Wall Street as a destructive force, economically and politically, is completely right.'

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/07/opini ... ctors.html

I hope this becomes a tipping point toward a more equitable political/economic environment in the US.

Thats interesting and I hope it continues as it has been going, it looks real grassroots protest. Unfortunately in europe we have violent anarchist and anti capitalist movements who hijack any kind of protest, whether it's student fees or capitalistic and the main thing that suffers is rational debate and a solution that doesn't require the scorched earth strategy.
What a long strange trip it is.

If you have an hour to spare this is a good discussion about protest music and it's influence or otherwise. Particularly interesting is the section regarding the contribution made by Hip Hop, Rap and other artists during the recent uprisings in Arab part of the world.
