Chipkaart

Post by Couch »

From what I read, the OV-Chipkaart costs 7.50. Do you get 7.50 worth of credit on the card, or is it just 7.50 for the privilege of having the card, then you have to add $ to the e-purse to go anywhere?

The 7,50 is a fee for the card that you don't get back. You can get the 24 - 168 hour passes without paying the 7,50. http://www.gvb.nl/english/travellers/ti ... ducts.aspx

But the card is good for five years, so if you are a repeat traveler it works out to be cheaper pretty quick.

You have to add more money to travel, minimum balance
4E for bus/tram, 20E for trains.

As geeky says if you are a repeat visitor, it's
worth it, and it can be used all over the Netherlands
(bus, train, trams) - so nice for trips out.

Using my card on bus 197, cost of the trip back to the airport was €2,53, with €12,05 rermaining on the card. Yeah, I made a note of it.

Quick and easy to reload at a Metro station (fuck that crowded GVB office, unless you get there at 7am). BigJames420 pointed me to the Metro station near Voyagers and we both reloaded very quickly.

I had to use the tram a lot recently with some guests... it worked out cheaper to use the passes than the OV chip.
