Bikes, cheap, used, or secondhand.

I have read a few reports that people will be selling bikes at the supermarket on the board?
Is this true?
Is there many?
How much would I expect to pay for a bike that will last me a month?
Can I really find a bike in the canal?
if so where is a good spot for this?
I don't want to rent one as I want to paint it mad colours and make it my tripper mobile, so they wouldn't like it if I did this to rentals everyday.
In Australia, we can buy a bike fairly cheap($5 AUD) from the dump, refuse center, recycling center. Does Amsterdam have a dump or recycling center where I can purchase a cheap second hand bike????
Anyone on here from Amsterdam, that would want to sell us a bike cheap???
One of you should do this as I'm sure you would make heaps of cash, offering bikes to all us stoners when we come over? You'd probably get them back pretty cheap as well. When we leave.

http://www.recycledbicycles.org/home.html - good place to start.
Several of the markets will also have people selling them, the Noordermarket for sure does, dont buy off the street as the likelihood is the bike will be stolen.

Recyclec Bikes is probably your best bet as Boner posted. The last time I was there they had a couple of bikes for €50. Also worth a try is the Waterlooplein flea market, there is at least one booth that sells bikes. Whatever you don't buy one off the streeys, its probably stolen. The police are known to do random checks to see if it is. Also you want to get a decent chain or you might see your bike for sale on the streets. Unfortunately finding a bike for a few euros won't happen.
Peace

The chances of being caught by the cops if you buy a stolen bike is somewhere between slim and none.
Karma is another matter.

thumbs up for recycled bikes
i rented from them last time in town
take in consideration when buying a bike
how much the bike & bikelock is going to cost
but if going to permanently alter the bike
more power to you

It says you can fish in the canals. Would they really empty their shit into waterways which snake there way through their own city??

Yes, a lot of the houseboats aren't connected to the sewers and all their waste goes into the canals, I've stopped on a few that do just that.

I think people forget the canals are there for flood control. I know someone who has lived in Amsterdam a little over 5 years, hee was just hooked up to the waste water in the last couple of months.
