Good Amsterdam Meals Here

Post by Lunchbox »

The wife and I had quite a few good meals last week. Thought I'd pass on some information for anyone interested in some nice dinners. None of the places were really that expensive or fancy. For the most part we were looking for good grub at places that were not too touristy.

Cafe George - bartender somewhere sent us here. Food was pretty good. Supposed to be a trendy euro local joint, but quiet when we got there. Service was pretty good, too.

Balthazar's Keuken- small restaurant with a fixed menu. You get a choice of fish or meat. Both were really good. Generally not into a fixed price dinner, but took the chance. High quality well-prepared food. Good service, too. Had waiter named Bos(?) after us of a smoker friendly bar after dinner.

Brasserie Vlaming- again, good food at decent prices. Service was slow, but hey... Another nice little restaurant. Apparently they are famous for their toffee dessert and rightly so. It was crazy good (and I usually only have beer for dessert!

YamYam- kind of a hike from most of Amsterdam, but just outside the Jordaan. Our favorite meal of the trip. Wood oven piazza was fantastic. I had a whole fish which was prepared perfectly. A really casual place with superior food. From our perspective, this is the perfect restaurant (except for the typically slow service). We didn't have one, but apparently you need a reservation. Go here. Also, it is right across the street from Coffeeshop Supermarket.

That's all I can clearly remember as each dinner for me included quite a few beers. Contrary to what you hear, there is some good food to be found in this city.

Well, not sure that it fits the American breakfast requirements, but we had a couple of great breakfasts at Greenwood on the Singel. Small little cafe, but the food was top notch. Think eggs Benedict variations...

To the original poster, I am glad you had a nice meal at Cafe George but that is an exception...I had two terrible meals there and won't go back. :D

The Globe (sports bar/hostel) in the RLD do a couple of very good breakfasts and round about half the price of Barneys, they also have a smoking area with tables and we normally eat in there think big room with loads of tabes chairs and a couple of pool tables.
