I'm trying to change the MTU on my router, I've tried to follow this: http://www.speedguide.net/faq_in_q.php?qid=199 but I dont seem to have the WAN or ATM button:



Anyone have any idea? thanks.

Have you tried the Advanced tab or the Manual Internet Connection Setup?
It's there somewhere, just a matter of going through every tab/option, I guess the layout might change a bit according to the firmware version that's installed on your router.

I looked everywhere and can't see where I change it, cheers anyway, I'm hoping Balou will see this when he's back from his trip as I think he's an IT guy.

Boner Im not quite sure I know what your looking for but I am curious as to how old your router is. We started having speed problems and thought it was our modem so when the cable guy came out he ran all kinds of tests and said it was our router and that it is too old to accomadate the speed we have on our internet. It was only about 3 yrs old when this happened so we went out and bought a new router and things have been cool. The router wasnt broken it just couldnt keep up with our speed anymore.

Ours isn't very old and is fine for the speed we have, the reason I want to change the settings is related to online gaming.

I see you are running V1.0 firmware. Have you tried upgrading to firmware provided by D-Link. The link you provided seems like a generic guide for D-Link routers. Often times they will use one firmware for tons of routers, then they will use a specific firmware for tons of other routers. So many models to be had. If you have clicked everywhere and dont see MTU field anywhere chances are you cannot alter it on that firmware. My suggestion is to first try to upgrade with newest D-Link firmware for your model & revision. If MTU still isn't on there upgrade to badass linux firmware:

Before you go forward with this CHECK BOTTOM OF ROUTER FOR REVISION!! Will be abbreviated REV "%something%"

It says it's the latest firmware, the other stuff looks too complicated for me so I think I'll have to just leave it as is, cheers for the help.

From wikipedia: Large packets are also problematic in the presence of communications errors. Corruption of a single bit in a packet requires that the entire packet be retransmitted. At a given bit error rate larger packets are more likely to be corrupted. Retransmissions of larger packets take longer.

Think of if this way:
All the information you create during your game i.e: shooting, moving, talking, and such has to be pushed into one of these MTU's right? If you think of the MTU as a box truck, and the data you create as boxes it takes longer to fill up, and if it has a collision on the information super highway it has to be rebuilt/repacked. I don't think this would gain you much.

Its on a warcraft website, but it works with all games because it changes settings in Windows operating system, not the game it self. Very simply, easy mod to lower your ping. Fair warning it might make large downloads (100MB+) slightly slower, but only slightly. I found it to be a great solution for ALL my online gaming.

Cheers for all your help/advice, I should of mentioned it's on the Xbox 360, basically a lot of people are lowering the MTU by 250ms (I think thats correct) to compensate for the lag in MW3, some people I've come across recently are seeing/shooting me way before I even see them which I believe is all related to this, I think I'll just have to suck it up and accept I'll never win a 1 on 1 with some people, thanks again for you help, much appreciated.

For some reason I thought you were trying to RAISE your MTU. That makes sense, lowering it should help! If you want to take a picture of the bottom of the router for me to read (make sure its readable) i can get you to the correct page to install the badass linux firmware. Its actually very simple, that webpage link has an over abundance of information. Its this easy:

1. Figure out model/revision (ill do this if you provide a pic)
2. Download the appropriate firmware (ill give you the link based of the picture)
3. Open up the webpage based interface (your picture above)
4. Find the upgrade firmware page in the webpage based interface
5. Point it to the file you downloaded.
6. Wait patiently while it updates
7. Lower the MTU by 250
8. Start pwning n00bs 1v1

I have done this on a cheap little $50 router, and it gives me features that comparable of a $300+ router from Cisco. Think of firmware as an operating system for your router. Right now your firmware is like Windows 95, after upgrade you will have tons more features like Windows 7 does VS Win95.

I'm glad to help you and others on this forum in anyway I can with computers. You all help me with A-dam, and pot questions in general.

Just saw this, are you still having problems? If you have a Dynamic IP, it should be under the manual setting towards the bottom. Try the guide on this site http://sites.google.com/site/networkguidedemo/home
