Just to recap, the thread that started all of this went something like:

Person A asked a question about hash in Israel.
Person B replied "Free Palestine!"
Person C made a more inflammatory anti-Israeli comment.
Person D verbally attacked person C with threats of violence.

Eventually, many posts later, someone actually answered person A's question.

So, the way I see it, person B hijacked the thread and started a political debate in person A's thread. Person C exacerbated the problem by being unnecessarily provocative and person D lost the plot altogether.

In amongst all of the colourful language and personal attacks there was a reasonable conversation about one of the biggest issues in the world today. Nevertheless, I've now removed all of the posts between the original question and the eventual answer because they didn't belong there.

As I said earlier, I don't see why we shouldn't discuss politics in Off Topic and there are already many political threads in the 'Other' sub-forum. In retrospect, though, maybe a controversy corner isn't the way to handle this. Encouraging people to be controversial for the sake of it isn't very constructive.

Some time ago I suggested introducing a few more sub-forums into Off Topic but not everyone was keen on the idea. I think some topics are quite transitory, travel plans for instance, whereas others can go on forever, like coffeeshop reviews. With thousands of topics it makes sense to try to categorise them a bit. I think the sub-forums in Off Topic make it easier to navigate. A music fan can browse through topics that would otherwise be lost if they were buried in 'Other'. Conversely, if you're not interested in sport, you can avoid that sub-forum altogether.

It's fun putting the world to rights. I think it would be sad if we had to avoid certain subjects because we can't trust ourselves not to lose the plot if we stray into those areas. If fans of opposing football teams can manage to keep their banter within bounds in the sport sub-forum then why shouldn't we be able to do the same in a politics one?

I think a political sub forum would be the way to go, maybe have it totally unmoderated would be the best way to start?
