Any fans of The Water Margin here ?

Post by Lord Average »

"Do not despise the snake for having no horns, for who is to say it will not become a Dragon !"

Yep, I grew up with the Water Margin back in the late Seventies, and every few years I get the calling to watch the entire series over again, which is exactly what i am doing at the moment. I am not ashamed to say that I love it, but I am wondering if this is just a personal thing or if it has a special place in anyone elses life ?

I will be the first to admit that many things from that era dont stand up well to a second viewing (Monkey is a painful example, and Kung Fu is boring). And yes it is more than a little slapstick, but for me The Water Margin remains special as it has a genuine charm and an underlying nobility that still shines through.

I confess that I have always been a sucker for anything that weaves martial arts, social justice and Taoist wisdom together (OK there may not be many programs that do that  ), but dammit, The Water Margin is simply one of the best things that has ever been on TV

Ahhh So "Lord Average", I tried to Karate chop many things because of this programme!!
If my memory serves me right, were they not all travelling towards the big fight (good verses evil) but i can't remember if there was ever the huge battle scene i built myself up for. In that regard it was a bit like "Shogun" another classic series and one i was lucky enough to find the video box set of in a second hand shop for a £1.00!!! As you said of others, "Shogun" hasn't aged so well when you watch it, but it still looks pretty good to me, especially "Mariko", the love interest. The book is fantastic if you haven't read it.

I'd never even heard of this show/series before (growing up stateside), but the local library has a 9 DVD NTSC set (Chinese lang. version) of this title, and I'm at the top of the queue to get it.

Just brought it home. While I knew this box set's spoken language was going to be Chinese (Mandarin, I guess) I was also expecting English subtitles. Not to be. Visuals are superb though.

I used to like the nutter Dragon guy, whatever that was about I can't remember.
Of course like most people my age I can recite the theme tune on request.
Brilliant never ending series from an age when the UK wasn't so US-centric (televisually that is)

Expecting this to be delivered from Amazon soon. I didn't think The Water Margin would have made it onto DVD until I read it here.
