I tend to agree Slimline, its a really difficult one. Though Kermit makes a good point about what Lemming would want to be happening to the place.
Kermit wrote: And just to clarify, I am talking the ability to delete anything here not individual topic mods coz they are not important, but being able to delete anything is too much control and would need careful thinking over.
I would say there are ways to get around these concerns, even though right now they are obviously less important than the spam problem.

The trick would be for Lemming (hope he is ok too) to create a spam usergroup which has no permission to post, and a hidden section only visible to moderators & above. Then give moderators the power to move suspected spammers into the spam group, and their posts / threads into the hidden forum. Lemming could then have oversight as the only person actually able to ban those accounts from the spam group as and when he has time to go through them, and remove their posts completely (or restore them if anything was legitimate).

Personally I think telling mods not to ban anyone or remove anything that isn't obvious spam should be enough, but if there is a historical concern on the forum about moderators and what that would do to the board then imo the above suggestion would solve it (and should be pretty easy to implement).

I wish I could. The mods are only able to delete/move/merge post in the Off-Topic Subjects only. Lemming is the only Global Moderator/Admin on the forum.

Yeah, until the spam gets sorted, I might just take off for a little while.

If everyone goes, then the forum will be left for the spammers... It might make people avoid the site thinking it's also dead... Might be counter productive?!?

That's another red herring dude. Turnitin is an academic plagiarism checker, almost all the academic institutions in the UK use it; while that guy's opinion about it may or may not be valid it is most definitely very subjective to call it malicious and, assuming it is what he says it is, it is 100% not anything to do with this spam whatsoever.

The only immediate solution is to close registration to the forum, and then spend however long is necessary to cleanup. I'd consider the easiest route of a mass prune of all new accounts in the last x no of days and all their posts, should fix things most of it with only a tiny bit of collateral damage. After that, fixing the forum reg. process and addressing the moderation thing are musts imo.

Right now I just hope Lemming turns out to be ok and turns up soon before the site gets hammered so bad it causes hosting issues or something, let alone every real person abandons it.

I agree, we can't hack his site. Tempting as it might be... :( it is really bad right now but it will get sorted when lemming gets back so I will have to suck it up till then. I am just hoping that lemming is fine and well and has thought sod it I need a Cannabis Cup jolly and is stoned in the corner of a quiet coffeeshop with a fake beard and glasses
