A couple of daze ago I took what remained of the Sweet Pink Grapefruit (15gms) and made some oil (slightly over 1gm).

After letting the oil sit for 20 minutes in hot tap water, I placed it in a preheated oven (100c) for 5min. I removed it and worked it for maybe 2min, about how long it took to start becoming thick.
While I was working the oil, I raised the temp. to 130c. I did this because I thought the temp. was too low, the oil wasn't the consistency I wanted.
I put the oil back in the oven for another 5min, checking every min. to ensure it wasn't too hot (smoking hot).
I removed the oil from the oven and scraped it onto a piece of baking paper, and worked it for a couple of minutes. Once the consistency was such to where it became futile to work, I placed the oil in the freezer (-5c).
After 2hrs in the freezer, I removed and placed it (oil on baking paper) on a piece of aluminum foil and then on to a stove top burner (set at 1).
Once the oil reached a working consistency, I worked it for about five minutes, noting extremely small bubbles bursting at the surface. Once again, time for the cold locker... Same steps - 2hrs, then remove; work it for about 5min, then back into the cold. I did this process 10 times over two days, noting different things such as the surface explosions (I used my hand held microscope and observed the oil at 30x, 60x, and 100x), and how over time the oil was becoming much darker, but not a burnt darkening, something else... :?:
Just before I wrote this I finally took a sample to the oil and put some real heat to it. All I can say is wow, definitely a HUGE difference when compared to what I had processed the first three attempts at oil making. The taste is unique, (sorry I don't have the descriptive talents as geekymonkey), there is NO residue to speak of, and the FX are clear and up.

Thanks to USBL for sharing some of the techniques for producing quality oil.

Happy concentrating...

Ron, you should try the less is more approach. Just go into hot tap water for like 10mins or so, just to soften. Work for 2-3mins, let sit for 10mins and then back into the freezer. Do that once a day..

Ive been doing that for 16days now, and its just been getting better. I tend to notice that i get the most (and biggest) bubbles out in the freezer also. Im thinking the cold contracting the oil forces the butane out..

Thanks Slo, I appreciate the insight.
ZBeebs may have something there as well.

Since I'm a newbie to the oil making scene, I'm taking in everything and attempting to formulate my own process. From my research, I'm not sure I will have anything original, but maybe taking parts and pieces from what does work and combining them... dunno. It's a process...

I still think there's a better way than slow purging, maybe pressure? The idea is to remove the butane or whatever super critical fluid that was used, along with oxygen and water, correct? Doesn't a pressurized device perform the same in a matter of minutes? I realize that the average stoner may not have immediate access to such a device (that's me I think), but is it a viable alternative than using toxic chemicals?

I'm not looking to cut corners, just trying to build a better mouse trap...

There are people who use a "pump and seal" which can be found online cheap to use pressure to remove butane...I have not tried it myself but it makes sense to me...Making a vaccuum in the mason jar should force any gasses from the bho...

http://www.pump-n-seal.com/

And it's not rushing when you let it cure properly...That way I feel you keep the terpenes (flavor) as well as remove all the butane.

I dont know if im starting to have problems, the batch im working with now just keeps getting thicker. Not much just a little, real slowly. Im thinking is just the materials used?, my trim looks and smells way better than the sour shake used, but, the sour shake is staying runny and my trim is not. Or it could be the tap water is just to hot and im slowly cooking into budder?. Or the heating once a day is just to much and i need to skip a few days in between? Or maybe everything is alright and im just over reacting?

I will post up some pics tonite, see if we can figure it out..

Like i told Bong, anybody can make oil, its the purge/cure that separates the boys from the toys. Im not there yet, but im trying! Just thankful we have the Spoon king here to lead the pack..

Hey Zbeebs yeah i got a UK version of pump and seal. See page 2 of this thread for pictures. would love to compare our findings!

Look forward to seeing what you've made Slo, i think the temp of that water is critical and as you say its so easy to cook it into budder...i think warm water is the way to go, from the tap not the kettle..and dont get your pyrex to hot
gonna heat me some Ti

+1

Once I'm able to get my green hands on a large quantity of shake, I'm going to go nutz trying various techniques including the slow cure. I want to be able to compare the different methods and determine which makes the most sense to me. I'm not into low end or high end this or that, I'm into what works best for me. In this instance, if I end up liking the long purge, then the long purge it is. If there is another, so be it.

Now then, everybody shut the fuck up. Can't you see I'm trying to CONCENTRATE!!!

Happy Concentrating...

What does spoon smell and taste like? Does it have any relation to the original bud? Or does all spoon taste and smell similar regardless of strain?

Not in the past 2 days i would say.. Here's some pics, let me know what you think..

The dark is the sour shake, the light is my trim.. I took them out the freezer and just let sit (no hot water) for 30 mins. Mixed for a few mins and took the pics. I dont think im going to go back in the freezer or heat with water any more. Just goin to leave out and stir once a day..
