Outlook Express/Hotmail

Post by Doog »

While waiting for a reply from MSN, I thought I'd give you guys a try with this one since you obviously all use the internet anyway.

I got myself a hotmail address and wanted to use it with Outlook Express.

Thing is, you get asked for type of server and then the address for the incoming server and outgoing server before you can be properly set up.

Anyone out there give me the info I'm looking for?

Yes, I do read the hotmail versions but I'd like to have Outlook Express up and running with my hotmail account so that I can use the browser window for, well, browsing instead of checking out of a site (such as this one) to check my mails and then check back in again.

Do you use Firefox browser? you can have multiple tabs on multiple windows, and you can drag and drop them at your leisure...much better than IE, and more secure. BTW Gmail is way better than Hotmail IMO Doog, again it has multiple window facility and many other great features...makes Hotmail look pretty crap, having said that there's the new windows mail coming soon...
Sorry if I misunderstood, I've just had my sunday joint.

Yeah, think I'll just leave the seamless, streamlined browsing and e-mail experience to those who really need it. My inbox is never even close to bursting.

Was planning to give AOL the old heave-ho and wanted a new mail account up and running before then.

Well, I really have to say, gmail offers alot better spam protection, and alot more space. You can even use it as remote file storage (over 2 gigs of free space). And there's this great tool that google just officially adopted (it wasn't written by them)... it's a little envelope icon that sits in your system tray and tells you when new mail arrives. In the almost 2 years (23 months) I've used gmail, I never ONCE considered using a different email service. Gmail is simply unmatched. I particularly like the "archive" and "search" features, so you can ardhive old mail (instead of leaving it in the inbox) and then search through it like you would do a normal google search. I find this very handy for leaving important emails in the inbox so I get reminded by looking at them every day, and finding older messages (like serial numbers for programs I'm reinstalling).

Dead useful tool, best thing to happen to e-mail since Lawrence G. Roberts' invention of email reply and forwarding.

Looks like GMail is really the one I should be looking at then after such strong endorsements so far and it has it's own config tool for OE.

I'll keep the hotmail account for now until the time comes when I free myself from the iron grip of AOL and set up with a more reliable and more helpful ISP.

I should never have left BT
