What do you mean, TC? That place looks totally normal

Talk about a sketchy looking building. The article said something about 3 floors, but the building looks taller than that.

Thanks for the post geekymonkey.
Hey now, how much did you smoke before reading the article, you know, the one you posted?
"Authorities raided the five-story building in the Van Nest section early Tuesday afternoon, pinching three people and confiscating more than 1,000 pounds of pot, police said."
"Investigators eventually found that growing operations were set up on three floors of the building, complete with lighting, fan and sprinkler systems — making the whole spread into a greenhouse."
Bzzzzzzzzzzz...

The building does look fairly nondescript for that neighborhood. It was the knuckleheads who weren't. Stupid is as stupid does.
To all, think about this sad example as a learning lesson for what NOT to do, mainly draw attention to yourself. Even the power company seemed to not know what was going on. Neighborhood watch can be a blessing and a curse all at the same time.

Pity party is down the street from Looserville for these clowns.

Looks like the bankers had 2 years out of it and it gave living to a few people so well done for surviving that long.
What a long strange trip it is.

Imagine how much longer they could have gone on growing had they given a damn about the details...
I'm not in favor of people getting arrested for growing, possessing, or consuming, but as the old adage goes - stupid is as stupid does.

YOu know , you dont have to be "stupid" to get busted for indoor growing in the states. Part of the war on drugs has these tasks forces that go out with infrared lights and look at rooftops. SOmehow they can see the grow lights and other things help bust people too like exhorborant <sp> electric bills for a building that isnt in use. I think you can be pretty smart and still get busted.

Hey Cat,
True, even the most prepared can and have been busted, but when looking at the most common reason(s) why commercial grows are busted...
... stupid is as stupid does.
I think the growers in the story had stolen the electricity for over two years and the electric company didn't have a clue...

Ok, so I want to set up a small commercial grow in my single family dwelling with attached two car garage.
What precautions should I take to decrease the chance of being busted?
There will be quite a few if I take the time to think it through, do my homework.
If I don't want to get busted, I'll do what it takes, or face the (possible) consequences.

Things NOT to do:
- Talk about it. This above all else. It's the golden rule to live (not incarcerated) by, no shit.
- Throw up a dozen or so 1K lamps; electricity use may be noted depending on how one pays. Better to use 600's... Buy bulk electricity if possible.
- Grow without heat shielding. Grow tents are perfect for shielding heat, and they are available in modules. If growing in a garage, direct the grow room exhaust into the house. Helps heat dispersal plus may also decrease the heating bill in the winter. Since I have a fire place, I can always direct the exhaust out that way. Fireplaces are expected to glow, no? Yes.. :)
- Involve too many people. Neighbors may take notice of the comings and goings. (see story by OP).
- Stand out and be more easily noticed. Blend in as best as possible, look like the neighbors is a good start... :o but oh so true.
and the list goes on...

Wait and see how many more people make the same mistakes, over and over and over again. Are we supposed to feel sympathy for them?
There's an old adage - "criminals are stupid". That's why they get caught.

I feel for the individual grower who has been busted due to no fault of their own. They are the exception, no ball busting from me.
As for the vast majority of others (commercially speaking) who've been busted because of a lack of attention to detail, no tea or sympathy from me.
So many lessons have been learned and are out there, waiting to be taken into consideration. But alas, they are so often overlooked and go unappreciated.

Maybe when the law changes so will all of this stupid shit... nah, people will always be stupid, it's in out DNA.

Happy farming...

LOL true. But I feel for the individual grower. I would especially not grow in my attic where alot of people tend to do it. Them lights show up like crazy. At least do it in the basement. I remember being in NO california and seeing this helicopter with CAMP written on the bottom of the aircraft. I ak my friend what that was about. He said that CAMP stood for California anti marijuana patrol and their job is to fly around and look for the big growers fields. Such a shame when so much effort could be directed at more criminal stuff.

For the individual grower, a little advanced planing (and saving) could/would negate most if not all heat signature issues. Use a grow box or heat-reflective material, both are easily procurable. Vent the warm, carbon filtered air back into the house/apartment. The smell of the air isn't that appealing, so one could always use dryer pads or tissues dampened with something odoriferous (cologne, perfume, oils, etc...). Heat issue negated, next...

If those spies in the sky were unmanned, they would officially become targets of opportunity... although NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard)...

Happy farming, and not getting caught...
