I do not know if it is allowed, but I done it a lot when there. I mainly jumped off and on in Haarlem when going between Amsterdam and Zandvoort. I never got caught, if I did I would just use the I am a dumb tourist and did not know any better excuse.

The train to either are doable, see http://www.nshispeed.nl I would suggest visiting Bruges just across the border in Belgium and stop in Antwerp on the way. Very beautiful cities I'm sure your wife would enjoy.

Peace

If you take the InterCity train you can buy tickets and jump on the train. Your other. Option is the Thalys highspeed train which if booked far in advance is cheaper than the IC.

Stay in the Netherlands, Gouda has a town hall that is 1450 Gothic and a 1668 Waag, Alkmaar has the cheese market, Utrect has there canals below street level, Harlem is a quaint medieval city with great museums, Rotterdam has some post WW2 architecture and a walk of fame with Willie Nelson and Jakie Chain to mention a few. You could spend 4 days exploring the museums in all those city's with a museum card.

Adamster, when you buy your ticket you pay for the distance of travel for the day, have fun with a return ticket you can get a lot of sight seeing done. But the trains stop in the early morning so the freight can have the tracks

Tickets go on sale 90 days or so before departure. Also if you book on http://www.thalys.com and choose France and English; it will give you the option of Any Belgian Station (ABS). So you can choose via Antwerp and see the city before continuing on to Bruges. FYI they charge a 5 euro fee.
