What area is best to stay in?
I am looking for an apt rental for the 17-23 April. I stayed at the Bulldog last year, had a blast, but would like to be a little outside of the red light district. I don't want to be too far away. I never used the trams last time i was there, just walked the whole time. I'm thinking either the Haarlem area or Jordaan area. Any suggestions, info, help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: What area is best to stay in?
ok, nevermind about Haarlem, looks a little too far away.
Re: What area is best to stay in?
Jordaan's a nice area, not too noisy at night but near enough to everything, tram's don't run that way so could be a bit of a pain if yr feet start to feel the cobbles
. Leidesplein a good area loads of accommodation, plenty of trams and smoking establishments.
I like De Pijp but depends how far out of the centre you want to be.
Yeah Haarlem's a 20 min train ride away, worth a visit.

Re: What area is best to stay in?
all depends on where you mostly gonna hang out at!
Jordan is far west i find kinna out of the way of everything (for I may not be for others)
Haarlemstraart is HIP it the new location close to train station Dampkrings II Barney shops Greenhouse the area is made for tourist and ppl who are in town and have to leave fast everything you need is there ...but..
Id look into being near Dam Square why? cause its central of everything your almost 1/2 to train station and 1/2 way to vondelpark or museumpleins ...so either way you do north or south your less then 1.5km< dutch KM
and trust me aint the same then in america...i know this cause i done it many time on bike amsterdam to Harlem and the sing say 19km but on my speed ometre = more them 25km this cause in dutchland they calculate in a straight line but forget to tell that youll be zig zagging you way to harlem

Re: What area is best to stay in?
I have been to Amsterdam 7 times now for between 10 -15 days each trip and I say that the Jordaan is the best place in AMS to stay.
It is like a small town within the big city and is filled with great people and charm. Also has some of the best weed for much better prics than in the centre.

Re: What area is best to stay in?
once again, thank you all for your help....with this trip being last minute, because of work, i wasn't able to fully research where i wanted to be this time...and only being in Amsterdam for 3 days on my first trip, i didn't get to go around the area to get a feel...this time i will definitely be getting more familiar with the area and seeing what areas i like and don't like...i food this place,http://www.amsterdamstay.com/apartments ... 2&guests=2,
and it is everything i need...bed, bath, and smoker friendly...plus it has a little kitchenette, which i most likely won't use, and a sitting area....location is right next to central station, and this area of Amsterdam, me and my feet got well aquatinted with last time...I can't wait to get there and meet everyone, smoke up, and get tatted, as well as seeing the beautiful city more in depth...
once again thanks for all your recommendations and aid during my search!

Re: What area is best to stay in?
Hope you are in the area near Harlemstraat in that case as it is the perfect area for a short trip. Everything you need is there. If you are off on the other side toward the old ship there is always Voyagers, Solo and Bluebird not too far away.
Personally I'd like to stay in the De Pjip or Vondelpark area as I like to cycle about anyways and having the market, all the shops and top notch coffeeshops like Club Media and Katsu nearby is always handy!
Enjoy your trip!

If you want to be "a little outside of the red light district," there's always the Hotel Krasnapolsky. It's a very, very quick walk to the RLD, you're in Dam Square, and a short walk west takes you to the beautiful W.Canals and Jordaan area. It is expensive, but if you go to the Dam frequently, you've got to stay there once. I've been twice and each time they upgraded my room to a huge suite at no extra cost, so in the end, I actually received a bargain rate. Of course, there's no guarantee for an upgrade. They also have Kras. apartments around the periphery of the RLD; they always seem to get good reviews, although I've read some reviews that indicated they were in the RLD. You might also want to consider a place on N.Voorburgwaal or Spuistraat just for a change of pace. The RLD is a short walk from these areas and you might find the area to the immediate west of Dam Square a bit more sane. If you're interested in exploring all areas of Amsterdam, those 2 streets work a little better for me because I walk all over the place, including the South and West, but am never far away from the Eastern attractions and some lovely, residential, quiet streets in the Southeast. Good luck and have fun!

We spent a couple nights at the Krasnapolsky on our honeymoon in 2009. Paid about $75 USD per night using priceline. Checking out bidding websites (biddingfortravel.com for example) shows that Krasnapolsky can usually be had for less than $100 a night using priceline.Opus132 wrote:If you want to be "a little outside of the red light district," there's always the Hotel Krasnapolsky. That being said, for our next trip in 2014 (15 nights starting April 18th) we are looking at renting an apartment, haven't decided exactly where yet...
