They ask you for your passport but they really should say 'government furnished ID' because they will accept drivers licence for example. I use my expired Virginia motorcycle permit and have never had a problem.jimi62471 wrote:You trickey dog you!! I got a "passport ID card" they could deal with just seeing that. but great idea.. That's a point, an out of date UK government issued passport under UK law is legaly valid as id for 2 years after the expiry date and can even be used for domestic flights for those futher 2 years. Therefor under EU law has to be accepted as legal id as its still valid as id in the country of issue for 12 years. So question, take both my old and new passport with me, keep the new one at the hotel as needed to fly, but will the old 1 be accepted as id for when out and needed for coffeeshops etc seeing as still legal id in the UK even if can't be used for international travel?.ed the head wrote:They ask you for your passport but they really should say 'government furnished ID' because they will accept drivers licence for example. If it were me, I would attempt to leave the outdate passport or other form of ID at th hotel, and take my current passport with me around the coffeeshops because you just might run into an anal retentive bud tender somewhere.Dave J wrote:That's a point, an out of date UK government issued passport under UK law is legaly valid as id for 2 years after the expiry date and can even be used for domestic flights for those futher 2 years. Thats what I hear more and more these days yet it makes little sence to have to carry a travel document\passport on you at all times if thats the only id you can get back home with in case of loosing it or getting mugged\robbed or jacket\coat stolen etc. Surely any home country government issued id if photographic should be accepted for the reasons I just gave?. Prehaps a European photographic id card (no, not the European ID card that can be used as a passport as not all European countries issue them) that simply can only be used as a form of id, kind of like the proof of age photographic id cards like we can get here in the UK?.matty223 wrote:i might be wron but isnt it the law in the Netherlands to carry id and for tourist to have there passports on them,

In any case yet to book my diggs, will almost certainly do the Bulldog as my budget is getting ever tighter with about 11 weeks to go. But for me going on my own then I'd sooner taker the cheaper accomodation option and save the cash for the smokes. Sure, I like the idea of comfort and a decent place but unless I'm with a woman they there is no choice
Re: How much does it matter?
hahaha Stuart, i agree, if i could sleep under the stars i'd do it to save for smoking more !!
I used to go to hostels on Warmoestraat, my fav' was Meeting point as you can smoke in the lounge and you can have toasties at 3am too, they got a bar with alcohol as well.
I tried Winston ... looked a bit fancy, and in the end i didn"t like it since they close doors at 1am and you're only allowed to smoke on the street (i'm too old for that) plus no locker in the room (and screamy girlies in the morning ugggh).
Next trip i'll splurge a bit at Voyager's with ensuite bathroom ... and my new tablet

I decided to stay at Voyagers after all myself. Can't resist staying above a coffeeshop at least this once. (although last year we were right at the edge of neiuwmarkt, hsb, rockit, jolly joker all within 100meters of the front door. ) close to chinatown, central station...gonna be fun!!!!

Re: How much does it matter?
Given the choice between staying in a 2 or 1 star for 60 eu or a 4 star for the same price I always take the 4 star.
Just a matter of comfort and value.
Mostly use Priceline to get these deals. Worst case scenario I get the Movenpick which is only a 10min walk to Voyagers anyway.
However this trip I got a good deal on a single ensuite room. Place is probably a heap but for 40eu a night a decent price for the middle of Summer in the middle of town. also no one will give a shit that I am going to smoke in the room. also free brekkie, also 5 mins away from Voyagers, 1 minute from Greenplace/Hill St at the market, 5 mins Bluebird etc etc.
Sometimes cheap is cheap is cheap is better if you know what I mean
