Just booked a lastminute.com "secret deal' for £140 3 nights. The description says "Stay in the Newest Hotel in Town!" which is the Ramada Apollo Amsterdam centre hotel (built 2011), its out by Rambrant Park which is a little way out but worth it for the savings and a nice room (keeps her happy).
We'll be cycling into town but the tram is close by and only takes 10mins....sadly I don't think we'll get away with blazing in the rooms I guess we'll have to stumble outside for some 'fresh air'.
My friends dad works for Hilton as a head chef. He can book a friends and family discount at any hilton in the world for £19 a night. That's where I stay in the 'dam

Used one of those Lastminute secret deals once but only cos I knew exactly which hotel. The price was OK. About the same as using Priceline NYOP. I think more and more sites will be doing this as time goes on.
I don't think this deal you got is anything special. 4 star hotels a lot closer to the City Center/Canal Ring can be had for similar prices. Priceline NYOP is the best way of getting a cheap 4 star in the Dam IMHO
However there is always something to be said for staying in a new area.
