Hey all
Just booked up to go 2 dam at Xmas but since the last time I went a few years ago I've been diagnosed as allergic to sugar, intolerant to white bread (the flour and yeast cause the problems ) and red meat. Does anyone know if wholemeal or wholegrain bread is available? Also does anyone know if there are fresh meat counters in shops that do cooked white meats ( chicken or ham preferably ). I remember all the food being full fat full sugar and not in the slightest nutritional but I'd rather not have to stick to veggie restaurants.

The best thing to do would be to avoid eating sugar, red meat and white bread when you are in Amsterdam.

I have found that I feel better after visiting Europe and I believe that it is because they do not use the corn sweetener like they do here in the US. You should be fine, the people who serve you will help, just ask. Have fun.

Allsorts of bread available from even just the plain AH supermarkets, plus many, many bakeries to choose from. Deli counters in the supermarket with loads of types of ham also.

Chicken - loads, seems to be one of their favourite meats... look out for Kip, but it's all pretty much in english in the restaurants also.

Many thanks I didn't even considered it when booking, used to live on the stoner munchie junk and fast food in years gone by, couldn't even use these places as a last resort now because effects leave me in such ill health.

A great topic as more and more people have food allergies/intolerances nowadays.

Have to say I feel your pain. Am quite seriously lactose intolerant, allergic to chicken, soya bean, alcohol, beer, wine and spirits, coffee, cola, grapes, melon, oats.... The list goes on....

Have found the best way to avoid foods you are allergic to is to be in control of what you eat. Remember in a restaurant it is very hard to know what they are putting in your food.

I think the best thing to do it go to AH and stock up for the day. Sugar is a tough one to avoid. I've been on a no sugar diet before as a detox and it is possible.

the other thing to do is carry a list of the foods/substances you are allergic to and give it to the restaurant staff before ordering. If they can prepare something fine otherwise you can always go elsewhere.

The other issue is MJ drops sugar levels in the body so some kind of substitute needs to be found to keep you healthy.

Find out if it is processed/refined sugar or all sugar to which you are allergic. Most processed foods end up with sugar in them as food companies realise it makes food taste better and of course sugar is highly addictive. (bastards)

The sugar in fruit for example is of course unrefined but still sugar all the same. If it is all sugar you need to avoid then the list of foods can can eat is reduced drastically. You'd be amazed just how much food contains sugar and how much of the human race is addicted. (me included)

Finally remember the maxim. 'Eat to live' rather than 'live to eat.' It is a mindset that could be useful.

ps - White bread often contains refined sugar which could be the cause of your problem with that foodstuff
