Amsterdam Coffeeshops pre 1980??
Amsterdam Coffeeshops pre 1980??
High All
I am trying to find out how many coffee shops were in Amsterdam pre 1980??
I caused a stir when I said that when I went to Amsterdam in 1981 there were no more than about 6 coffeeshops back then!
Well I think the number might have been 3 or possibly 4 only!!!
As far as I can tell the first coffeeshop was mellow yellow (not the present one) opened in 1972
(down on the Amstel)
(it was called a teahouse back then)the second was opened at 16 Rusland summer 1975 and the 3rd was the bulldog near the old church opened December 1975.
I was stuck on 3 but was told in Het Balloon that he thought it opened in the late 1970s but was not sure as he was not the owner then .
I am allso interested to know of coffeeshops with licence numbers below 0 10.
The rusland is number 001 the bulldog 010.The licences were issued in the mid 1990s and the numbers were issued in order they were listed then by the authorities.
So bulldog should be 003?
There were places were cannabis was sold pre 1980 like milky way and the magic inn. but i am looking for coffeeshops only.
So if anyone sees a licence number up to 10 I would love to know of them. And any old timers remember early coffeeshops??
According to Nol Van shiak the Netherlands government did a report saying that coffeeshops and or youth clubs should be allowed to sell cannabis without fear of prosecution in 1976. But it was not published and made public until 1980 after witch 12 more opened.
Thanks
Best wishes to you all

Re: Amsterdam Coffeeshops pre 1980??
My first visit was in 1978 or 1979.
I don't know the exact number, but there were way more than the 3 or 4 you mentioned.

Re: Amsterdam Coffeeshops pre 1980??
High and thanks a great docu!!!
doesn't prove that there were only 3 or 4 coffeeshops back then but suggests i could be right??
I am hoping Old timer can give a name and or location for the shops he says he remembers 78/79ish.
And i was interested to hear no new shops have opened since 1995!
As far as i know Anyday coffeeshop opened in 1999 or 2000.
But it was called Anytime then and was connected to the Alkmaar Anytime coffeeshop so was maybe just a new branch
of the main shop was a way round it??
The guy with the beard is Werner Bruning not only started the coffeeshop seen and was also responsible for the netherweed phenomena
in the Netherlands.
He allso had the sensimili fan club.Anyone remember it (late 1990s)??
It was in the pije area on cornilis tootstrat and is now the home of Holland's first grow shop positronics now positive growth.
So a very important guy the first coffeeshop the first sensimilia in Europe and the first grow shop!!!
thanks again tech303 for a very nice link.
All the best all

Re: Amsterdam Coffeeshops pre 1980??
I don't remember which shops were there the first time I went.
I've been so many times that it's hard to remember exactly which shops were there each time.
It's also 30 odd years ago.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

The coffeeshops were busted several times pre 1980 so i am hoping old records may mention this
i have a friend in amsterdam and am hoping he can find mention in old news papers.
I am allso going to ask the guy in 420 Michel Velling (seen in the video)and any dutch old timers i can find.
I know the siberie opened in 1985 and is numbered 29, so only 29 back then!?

Pop into Paradox, i often see the owner in there having a smoke and chatting or playing
cards with the locals. He seems approachable enough.

I guess it's possible that some were not registered yet, that's one of the reasons that they were getting busted I guess.bedge wrote: Thanks old timer pity you cant remember. maybe there were only the 3 mentioned in the docu and after 1980 more opened.

Have you tried the Amsterdam city archive, the licensed premiises dept ? need to be a speaker of the Dutch no doubt.

What a long strange trip it is.

High i dont think its anything to do with registration as this didnt happen till 1995!!
All coffeeshops were busted periodically back then (according to Nol Van Shaiak). A list of suspected soft drug dealers was kept only before 1995.
Would it be possible you can ask people you were with back then who maybe remember a name and or location?
thanks for your input
