Can't answer for you in the UK, but for us from the states the cheapest exchange with the least charges is you debit card at a bank machine.

I got offered a good rate for my sterling on Damrak last year, then the tender tells me "but we are closed" Pmsl, proper funny. Tbh though change before you go as its a ball ache when every place is shut and Ye bank cancel your card for unusual transactions. Lmao

My bank in US changes very little to exchange, so I do it before
( it is nice to not have to think about it or waste time in the dam changing money)

Both of those are bad ideas. Shitty exchange rates

Best way to do it is to buy online. Go to Travelex.co.uk buy the amount you want and choose to collect it from the airport on the day you leave. You get a MUCH better exchange rate that way.

Or go Thomascookmoney.com buy the amount you want online and then collect from your local Thomas Cook store. Again you'll get a MUCH better exchange rate than if you just walked into a shop or bank to buy.
