USA - Amsterdam or Rome Roundtrip + Rome - Amsterdam Roundtrip!!!
That's the way you have to do it.

f.e. my home Stuttgart - AMS is 99,- Euro for the Roundtrip with KLM, a single flight to AMS ist over 400,-Euros the same dates also with KLM! Roubdtrips with 3+ days stay are the cheapest.

Here are flights AMS - Rome with KLM f.e.:

Same here, I'm resigned to the fact that the trip will likely cost at least 200 more than I anticipated. Not the end of the world, just means I have to cut corners somewhere else.
Next trip: November 2013

Just booked my flights recently. £70 return with EasyJet or £93 return with British Airways, thought I'd pay the extra for the less hassle. At least theres no hidden fees with BA, and i'm insured!

My guess is that the U.S. stock market doing so well is the cause of travel cost grief. Every time the dollar surges, conversion rates fall. Fuel costs are steadily rising, and I heard a very good stock market forecast for 2013. None of this seems good for the traveler.

Might be the time to buy if you haven't yet.

Some could benefit from arriving/departing a city other than Amsterdam, ex... Paris, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Brussels, or Hamburg.
Something to consider is the cost (and travel time) between these cities. What....you thought this was going to be easy?
Example - I was traveling from Germany to Orlando; because the air fares were ridiculous at the time (+$1500), I got creative with my travel.
What I eventually did was purchase a round trip train ticket to Amsterdam, a round trip ticket to Tampa with Martin Air (no longer Pax), and a rental car.
Lastly, after all this, I still had enough $ for a half tank of gas. I pinched every penny so hard one could hear them screaming...
Good luck to all...
