As if anyone really knows...

Betcha those fuckers are holding airline stock and just want you to wait and pay more. Or is that just my suspicious mind?

My flight's best price was in December, but I couldn't commit then.

I put a ticket on a 7-day hold with United today, for fear that the price may go up: $1,088 round-trip for May-early June. One way I try determine the future price is by looking at the seat mapper. If seats are being sold fast, then I buy. Maybe that's not really indicative of future prices, but it's just my way of guessing. Is there anything worse than having a middle seat on a 10-hour flight?
Next trip: November 2013

Is it cheaper to upgrade at the airport than on the internet beforehand?

You might have done very well for yourself, especially for your travel dates, especially with United.

Flying on different days of the week can yield different prices.

I like picking off one end of a three-seat that's already has the other end taken, creating the vacant middle that I've had good luck with lately. Love an empty seat next to me. No one really wants to buy that seat. That's what I have for both my flights, the end. Tired of looking out the window already. Window seats are noisy and cold. That's what I get for booking so late.

Matty, do you mean upgrade to the front of the plane, with the full-recline pods and complimentary booze?

I assume Matty means economy class. I'm flying to London in a few weeks and I upgraded to economy class on United for an extra $200. Those seats provide a little more leg room. The upgrade you are asking about (1st class) is probably $2000 more.

The seat map is horrible way to figure out how many seats are left. It only shows the seats that are available in the fare class selected.

Huh? Upgrade TO economy, from where, the cargo hold?
I've done the same as Matt a few times in the 90's when flying long haul. The additional fees were considerably more than $200, more on the order of $500-750 (with military discount). Maybe if I were a member of a frequent flyer program, the cost might have been considerably lower, if not free. I've read on the KLM website that they do offer upgrades from ECO to ECO+ for a reasonable fee, something like 100 EUR (I forget, and when I went to look, I got high instead  ). I think Air France has a similar upgrade offer as well, but again, I got high.

If you see the seats selling out quickly, doesn't that indicate, possibly, that the price is bound to go up? Or vice-versa, if you see the seats are not selling (by checking it several times over a period of a couple of weeks or a month), doesn't that indicate that the airfare won't go up in price?

Sounds plausible, in theory anyway...
...if it works for you, keep on keeping on.
Thanks for passing this on...
