Quazer wrote:The new law is not very logical from my point of view: I get the point of trying to protect teens from the cannabis scene. But what about the drinking, gambling, prostitution and so on? It's ok for kids of all ages to walk past hardcore porn postcards (which are openly exposed outside the souvenir shops), but coffeeshops might ruin their characters? It's okay for them to see people drink their brains out each weekend, but to see stoners get high will ruin their lifes? Also those kids aren't stuck to a certain route, even if there was only one street with coffeeshops left, those kids who want to smoke would be smart enough to find it - don't ya think?

The new law makes perfect sense from a right wing prohibitionist point of view. It is about pointing at Cannabis and saying 'It is a danger to our youth, we must do something.'
The fact that as already pointed out that cannabis use among the young is lower than in prohibitionist countries is immaterial. The truth as Quazer points out about more dangerous and harmful drugs like gambling and alcohol is also conveniently ignored. It plays well to those lost in the prisons of religion and other authoritarian control structures.
Let's face it. When have facts or the truth been any use to people like that?

I understand in reality why Yo-yo isn't on the list, I guess I was just questioning the validity. In reality I am just cross/sad at the prospect of loosing great coffeeshops.

I was talking to a couple of guys who work in Betty Boop last week and the general feeling was that this idea has been going on for a while now (5 years or so). Neither David or Brevin seemed remotely worried about the possible closure and seemed to think it would be business as usual in 2014. I hope they're right.

As much as I love Betty's

& I fucking LOVE Betty's

these closures are going ahead , they may get an extension to 2015?is it but that's it ,they are less than 100m from the school which is causing them, Utopia, Anyday , HGF & the others in the area to close , only way for them to stay open past the closures is buy/take over another shop away from the closure areas .

Noooooooooooo!! Man I too love Betty Boop, its the only shop where I feel I could stay all day and wouldn't outstay my welcome. I know you're right but I hope you're wrong! At least 2015 would give me another 6 or so trips.

Heres an idea, probebly not a good one cos I've not had a joint yet today and my brains still going on low frequency but here goes:
Most coffeeshop owners make a lot of money. One school can cause 5 or 6 coffeeshops to close. Why don't 5 or 6 coffeeshop owners put together to buy a couple of the schools? Also buy/ build new buildings for the schools to be in that arn't near any cofeeshops? Is this possible? Probs isn't cos I guess someone would have done it by now.....

Yep and why the owner of 420 bought Dutch Flowers.

You can't buy something that is not for sale.

I think Old Church had to close due to the 1012 project?/RLD clean up ,rather than the school rule , then they took over the building(lease of?) where Rokerij 3 was

That upstairs room is one of the nicest CS spots I know - shame I am usually driven out by the fucking terrible put-a-donk-on-it music.
For my own perspective, could someone better informed confirm that around 180 CSs will remain in Amsterdam after these closures?
A bit late at page 9 I know, but couldn't some mod take off the superfluous exclamation marks in the title? We don't want to come across as an over-excited One Direction fan? Or maybe the OP is exactly that - in which case; my condolences for their soul.

I'm currently planning a trip to Amsterdam for about 23 people in January. I know about the coffeeshop closures and RLD clean-up, but realistically, how much of a blow is the coffeeshop scene taking on January 1st? Will it still be well worth the trip?

Walked past a coffeeshop that was near a school for young children (quick check on google maps tells me it is like 220m away walking distance) and it isn't on the list for closure......does the law only apply to schools that are near children of an older age ? I need to get googling.
