Thats a good idea to put your mind at rest. I think there was some minor anxiety about, but Amsterdam's a solid place and I'd say it will be at the bottom end of the scam city charts.
Apart from some of the weed prices.
I haven't myself heard any tales of travellers finding themselves in that situation.
Neighborhoods are what you have to look at very closely. and you can with G Earth and street view

(Top tools for the armchair globe trotter

) I once got the shuttle bus in from Schipol because my hotel was near the museums and it was the lazy option. On our way we dropped a young couple in a pretty desperate looking estate way out somewhere in the wilds and their hotel was seperated from the estate by a 4 metre high broken chainlink fence which the locals seemed to have chucked a fair bit of their rubbish over. It looked grim and it was obviously not what they expected poor sods.

.
We've done out of the centre places ourselves to save money and although some have involved a journey into town they've turned out OK, the best one we had was about half way between Harlem and A'dam, so a nice bike ride whether we turned left or right on the Haarlemmerweg.

I doubt that you will have any problems using any of the reputable agencies in town including Amsterdam Stay. They are more so looking for people running illegal hotels and have said they will not bother anyone using Air BnB, for now at least.
Since the announcement was made this past weekend the municipality has found itself on the wrong end of some angry reactions from Airbnb users but Jan-Jaap Eikelboom, spokesman for the central district, has assured users that the investigation's focus will be on uninhabited properties being rented without consent and not on the use of Airbnb in general.

Not sure why more people don't use this...Used for the last 3 times we've been to AMS and each time it's been perfect. Filter the search for smoking allowed and off you go! Will never stay in a hotel again now.
Latest one is right in the heart of the RLD - bit pricy @ 300 Euro's for the two nights but great apartment and fabulous location. Can't go wrong really...

Dissappointing if you dont make it Stuart. Thats a really nice looking place at a good price I'd snap it up if I wasn't already sorted. I had a nice houseboat on the lijnbangracht through the airb&b a couple of years back.

i use air b&b all the time, in every city we go to.
never an issue.
and we always save $$ over a hotel… plus you get WAY more value for your $$
just got back from san fran… we used airb&b to rent a 6 acre estate in silicon valley.
no issues.
you should be fine.
