Gettin' My Plan Together: July 27 - 29

Post by Harry Highpants »

Heading from Oz to Europe for my wife's 40th and have managed to sneak in a few days in Amsterdam, which I'm a bit excited about. First trip - but have wanted to go forever...

Thanks to ACD info, I've managed to snag a houseboat not too far from Siberie - which looks like a top spot. The missus is not much of a smoker, but is happy to be dragged around the coffeeshops for a toke or two while I disappear in a cloud of smoke.

I thought to make life a bit more interesting for her, I might grab one of these fun2go tandem trikes from Star Bikes http://www.starbikesrental.com/bikes.html (sorry, don't know how to upload a pic... ). Has anyone used/seen one of these before and have any thoughts on them? I figure it'd be fun to get around a bit (I like to do things while stoned) and I'd probably be a bit more stable on three wheels instead of two!! I probably won't venture too far - probably over to Albert Cuypmarkt around some of the surrounding areas of Centrum, and if I get really excited out to Haarlem for a day trip.

I've also sent the company a few emails to try to book one of them for the time I'm there, but no-one seems interested in getting back to me. Is this a common thing?

If you really want to look like a tourist, rent one. You're making a request quite far in advance, I would wait and send them a message a week before your arrival. Still no guarantees but they should at least reply. And that thing is quite wide for the narrow and crowded bike lanes of the Centrum.

Not really fussed about looking like a tourist or not, but I did give a thought to the width of the bike.
Reckon it would be an issue?

Not bad on a bike - happy to brave Indonesian road insanity on a scooter. I assume Dutch people are pretty handy on a bike - so if they stay out of my way, I'll stay out of their's!!

Is it that insane out there, or not too bad if you're confident?

No it ain't bad at all really. In some parts of town, it's safer to be on a bike than a pedestrian dodging bikes. You'll be fine.

Ha! That's what I figure!! If I'm gonna run into a bike anyway, I might as well have one too!!

Would the width issue on one of those tandems be a problem?

I think it would make for a rather awkward experience. Just my thought though, maybe it'd be fun. You could always try one of those paddle boats for some tandem fun on the water.

I take your point about it being a bit awkward - I was thinking that might be the case for parking .

I just like the idea of sharing the pedalling and having a bit of extra stability when feeling a bit wobbly from the coffeeshops. I do like to explore far and wide when I'm baked!

Some decent discounts on that iamsterdam card - thanks willjay!

Not sure if I'll show the missus after seeing this offer though... "Free admission to Tassenmuseum Hendrikje (Museum of Bags and Purses)"
I would need to smoke soooooooo much weed to make it through that!!!

Hmmmmm... on the other hand - that sounds great!!! 8)

With Amsterdam being so flat its really easy to bike around town. Most Dutch use a single gear bike for that reason alone. In some parts of town there are poles that separate the bike lanes and that could be very tricky to navigate. Even the tuk tuk drivers have to hop the curb every now and again.

You have been posted on the July Whos In Town page.

You can see who else may be in town during your stay.

If you don't see yourself, click your refresh or reload button
Your browser sometimes loads pages from your local cache and
you don't get the latest update.

Watch for Toke & Talks, I post them up to the last minute.

Set yourself up with your own T&T or Toke and Talk, where you pick the coffeeshop (your favorite)
and the date and time, I will post it and you wait for folks to show up, if they do you'll have a
T&T. If they don't you still get to enjoy your favorite coffeeshop!

By default I link your posting to your profile page here on ACD.

https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/forum/membe ... e&u=100034

I can change it to a web link ( myspace, facebook, personal page )
or an email address if you want.

You can do a little practice shopping on the Coffeeshop Menus page.
Any with arrows are less than six months old.

Any nice new menu pictures you can get will be much appreciated.
