2nd Trip To Amsterdam. April 14th, to April 21st.

Post by AlbertaAdam »

Hi everyone, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as well. My name is Adam and I live in beautiful Calgary Alberta. Im 30 years old and this will be my 2nd trip to Amsterdam. Last trip I went with 3 of my close friends in 2009 for 7 nights. This time around I will be going with my girlfriend(23 years old) it is her first trip and we will be spending 7nights in Amsterdam and 3 Nights in Prague to close out our trip.

We got a very good deal on return plane tickets with a Valentines day sale at KLM. The deal was almost $900 taxes and fees in for the flight to Prague and with any KLM flight you can take a free layover in Amsterdam for aslong as you want. So we opted to have a week layover in Amsterdam to start our trip and and 3 nights in Prague with a 4 hour layover in Amsterdam on the way home.

Our flight takes off Saturday April 13th, 3:20pm local time. We have a 9hour non-stop flight to Amsterdam and when we arrive it will be Sunday April 14th at 8:15am Local time. Hopefully we will be able to get some sleep on the flight to avoid as much jet leg as possible. The plan for the first day is to get our luggage to Central Station and rent some lockers as we wont be able to check in at our apartment until 2pm. Once we get our luggage taken care off it will be off to voyagers I think. Ive read many good things on here about the shop and there is a burger bar close by for lunch!

We booked an apartment for the first time with airbnb.ca. Last trip I stayed with Amsterdam Cribs and we were very happy with the apartment and the way we were treated by the host. Unfortunately they were booked this time around. So instead we decided to stay in a non smoking apartment so it gives us an excuse not to just stay in the apartment and get baked. We have to get off our asses and get out and about! Our apartment has a great location on a street called Pieter Jacobszstraat in between the Nes Cafe and the Greenhouse Coffeeshop.

We have a few things planned for this trip. In no particular order here are some of the things we plan to do. Spend a day at KEUKENHOF gardens, see the windmills in Zaanse Schans. Goto Zandvoort to see the beach(I know we wont be able to swim but it will be nice to see a beach half way across the world). Rijksmuseum, Zoo, The Boom Chicago smoker friendly canal tour(did this last time and was amazing!) See the markets. We are also going to get tickets to see the Sheepdogs(Canadian rock band) at the Melkweg on Thursday Night. My girlfriend is also a bit of a foodie so we will be trying alot of restaurants and different foods. Then for me personally it will be alot of coffeeshops and sampling of Amsterdams finest. Last trip when I came I lived in Ontario, Canada(for my whole life) and had access to alot of top notch gear but in the last year I have moved to Calgary, Alberta for work and when I moved here I didnt know anyone and have trouble getting top quality gear as I dont know many people here so its hard to locate. So it will be great to be able to have access to all the top quality gear.

Last trip some of our favorite smokes in no particular order where; Cheese(Homegrown Fantasy), Chocolope, Quaze, Pink Kush(Amneisa), SLH(Greenhouse), Nevals Haze(420 Cafe)and the Terminator Hash from Basjoe(is this still available, ive been reading the coffeeshop reviews on Basjoe here and havent read anything about it)

This trip I will be looking for samples of the stuff mentioned above. Also after reading here for the last couple weeks I will be looking for Kosher Kush, Champagne Haze, Hindu Kush, Casey Jones, Super Bio Lemon Haze, Pineapple Express(cause of the movie, lol). I also want to take advantage of all the hash Amsterdam has to offer. Last trip we really didnt smoke much hash but I really enjoyed the Rifman Hash, this trip I want to try Ice-O-Lator hash(any recommondations or shops I should look for)

Now to satisfy the girlfriends needs lol. Here is a list of Restaurants we have picked out so far. any recommendations or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Gartline
Toyko Cafe
Satelite Sports Bar
Greenwoods
Koh-I-Noor
Moes
Metropolitian Chocolate
Surya Restaurant
Castell
In De Wildeman
Indrapura
Moeders
De Bierfabriek
De Kas
Burger Bar
Pancakes! Amsterdam
Cafe De Klos
Nes Cafe
Fucco Vivo

In closing Ive provided a link to a map of Amsterdam that ive been creating on google maps to help assist with the trip. We arent the kind of people that like to have plans set in stone but its nice to have all of our options available to use on the map so whatever area we are in we will have options and where to go and what to do!

Thanks for reading and any info, tips, suggestions or advice would greatly be appreciated.

GOOGLE MAP OF AMSTERDAM

PS any info on Prague would be a great added bonus especially on how to get my hands on some gear or how to bring some with me.

Sounds good bishy69, I imagine NES will be our last stop most days as its crawling distance to our apartment. Keep an eye out for 2 young looking Canadians (i'm 30 but look 19) and my girlfriend is a hot skinny brunette. Cheers!

Thanks Willjay, I'm looking at the Holland card now, there are so many options with that card. I'm thinking of buying the 7 day and using it for KEUKENHOF, Rijk and the Heineken Tour. Just curious if anyone know if that card includes admission and transport to Keukenhof?

Welcome to the forum!

AFAIK, the original Terminator left the house when James sold Basjoe. So I'd guess it's no longer available.

Damn that's to bad that stuff was killer. Is James the man with the dreadlocks longer than he is tall?

Last trip when we went to Basjoe's we walked in the door and this huge man with super long dreadlocks was smoking this massive joint. We asked him what was good and he offers us some of this massive joint he's smoking but before he does he puts this stuff on it(Terminator) then he says TRY THIS!. so we do and of course we have to buy some. It was 50EU a gram(if i remember correctly) but it was KILLER. It literally terminated my best friend every time he smoked it, he would get to the point he would just stay at the floor and he couldn't even talk to anyone(good times! lol)

Here are a couple of pictures of the Terminator from my last trip. Would love to be able to locate something like this on my trip this time. Does Ice-O-Lator hash compare to the Terminator?

for food/drink I'd recommend:

Food:
Tapas de Catala: This place is the tits, my fave rest. in the dam (http://www.tapasbarcatala.com/)
quality Chinese: Nam Kee on Zeedijk http://www.namkee.net/locaties
for kabob: 5 Lange Leidsedwarsstraat. This place looks sketchy, but I've never had a better kabob. Went there daily for almost a week one trip.

Beer: In de Wildeman is ok, as is t' Arendsnest, but can be a little (or alot) snobbish. For a beer bar try Gollem, it is central (the one on Overtoom has a great selection on tap if you are out that far.) http://cafegollem.nl/

Pancakes Amsterdam: pannekoken with pine nuts and goat cheese is really good. Sadly, this place got lit up on some travel sites, and now every fanny pack wearing american tourist packing a water bottle heads there too. I'd either get there at opening, or pass. I've trekked over there to stare an hour wait in the face. For same quality, try http://www.pannekoekkelder.nl/.

genever: Wynand Fockink is always good for a stop, but I prefer De Drie Fleschjes (Gravenstraat 18) http://www.dedriefleschjes.nl/
t'Nes Cafe isn't gonna compare with an Original Joes, more like a downmarket Bear and Kilt. Super friendly tho, great place to chill. I usually hang at the Old Nickle (http://www.oldquarter.com/oldnickel/) for beer. Their selection is good, and no bullshit. Long term and friendly staff, occasional music Thurs-Sat. Place feels like the bar I would want in my basement.

In Prague, do not pass go - but head directly to the Chapeau Rouge (http://www.chapeaurouge.cz/en/). This place is screaming fun, as is most of Praha. I like the town almost as much as Amsterdam. And you'll learn to resent the shit beer that's sold at home. The castle is defo worth a trek. You could bus it, or do a 3 hour stroll across the Vlatava, and go Kafka all over the place with beer stops on the way.

Funny, I never expected to see anyone from Cowpatch on ACD, but now I know of 3 :D

sure. I added a couple of things to the post in edit.

fwiw - me and a buddy planned to go to the Keukenhof a year or two back, but got uncontrolled laughter out of a couple of locals we were hanging out with when we said we were thinking about it. Their joke was that were weren't 70 years old :D

That said, others on here have said its fine, and a good way to check out the Dutch and their gardening skills. And tulips too. If you want to do something like it, this kinda thing is really good, or at least the wife thought it was. http://www.toursbylocals.com/GardentourNetherlands
