Tips for nervous flier?

Post by Big C »

Well as I sit here stoned  I get nervous about the flight :( I don't take any valium or xanax because they fuck me up and make me feel weird :?

I have tried taking two ambien on a plane ride once. I once tried Nyquil and also alcohol which to my knowledge is essentially the same effect I am trying to get. I dunno I just can't sleep sitting up. Even the one time I got to sit business class I still couldn't sleep, but my legs felt much better when I arrived :D

I think I worry too much  I guess if it's your time to go you go

I know a lot of people would kill   to go to Amsterdam. I have been working hard and my feet hurt though :x
I dunno should I just shut the f*** up and get through(enjoy?) the plane ride?

You guys tell me if I'm crazy  Or you if you have any tips that would be cool 8)

I love the airport but me scared :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

When flying in troop seats on a military cargo aircraft, some would take Dramamine as a sleep aid. I've taken Dramamine a few times for this very reason and the meds work.
A common side effect in many anti-motion sickness meds is drowsiness. But there are also some negative side effects as well, such as nervousness. Goes against what you want. Maybe Dramamine won't work for you, or any of them, but it may be worth a try.

Difficult one. I went through a phase about 20 years ago where I was shitting it at the thought of flying anywhere and in the military you ain't got the option of saying no. I got round it by taking advice from the flight commander and booked a trial lesson in a light aircraft. Only an hour but apart from take off and landing you fly the plane yourself and understand that it ain't going to drop out of the sky. Try it, but the only warning is you may get hooked and spend all your money flying. I did.

Have you tried getting pleasantly drunk?

Perhaps a mild drunk on top of little sleep.

eat a strong space cake before you go into the gate. By the time you are in the air you will be flying. If the cake is made of the right stuff you'll be sleeping soon after whatever position your legs are in.

for longer flights 2 cakes are recommended just in case you wake up 1/2 way through the flight!
How much did you produce?

I have allergies, and have found that Benadryl gives a rather powerful side effect of drowsiness. I can't sleep on planes either so just bring music, DVD, or a good read to help relax you, and pass the time.
On one military flight I had to load up all the luggage in the belly of the plane and as compensation I got bumped up to 1st class. Had 4 huge leather chairs to lay accross, and still couldn't fall asleep! 4 seats to myself, on a Mad Men era plan with ash trays and everything. Felt like a jolly right pretentious fuck.

Ha Ha, i was thinking the same thing Treetop. Then i thought the space cake might make him super para either before he falls asleep or once when he wakes up?

I dont want the poor guy getting zapped by the air-marshall mid flight cos hes tripping!!

Or if he takes it too early he might get so para that he doesnt even board the flight.

i would go down the space cake route tho.......mayb get 3/4 paradox space cakes sent out to you (or make some strong ones yourself). As your doing the walk towards the plane, scoff three of them right then!! By the time your seated and strapped in, any chance of feeling para will be well and truely overtaken by a space cake induced coma.

When will you wake up.........who knows?

A properly oxygenated body can better handle stress and anxiety.

Drink pkenty of water throughout the flight day and flight; water reduced stress, anxiety and allows yourbrain to function better.

Practice deep breathing, concentrating on lung area in upper back. Do ten deep breathes, five seconds in, then five seconds out.

I also recommend working out the day of travel, do an hour of medium intensity cardio and/or some light weights. Your body will want and need to relax and rest during the flight.

If that fails, eat two space cakes and avoid alcohol. Alcohol works as suppressant, but can also wire you with all the sugar in it.

Good luck - chemical and med free is the way to go. Be clean and safe travels.

I find a beta blocker and a stiff vodka or two before boarding balances out the adrenaline so I'm edgy with excitement rather than nerves

Thanks guys! Yeah I think I will try a combination of some of the things you said. Definitely gonna try the chem med free route as nothing else has worked before.

Doesn't help that I just watched the movie "Flight" the other day.
John Goodman was fooking great in that one.

This may sound perverse, but I overcame a huge chunk of my fear of flying by watching those Air Crash Investigation docus on youtube. I think its about confronting your worst fears to overcome them. Yeah some of the situs are very scary but they also make you realise just how safe air travel really is (as you get to see the myriad of safeguards in place to stop your plan falling out of the sky) and also how skilled pilots are at overcoming problems.

If you can put some of the more unpleasant espects of those shows to the back of your mind ( ) greater knowledge of how it all works is a major factor to feeling more safe I reckon. For example, I've seen loads of people shit their pants when the plane 'clunks' as the landing gear is lowered - not me :D

I also had an aborted landing about a year ago and nearly everyone on there shat it when we began a rapid and rather violent climb when coming in to land in a rainstorm - they were scared cos they didnt know what was happening. I knew, cos I'd seen a similar incident on a documentary a few days earlier, and I was pretty relaxed about it (admittedly I'd eaten a lump of Afghan at Schiphol before leaving so was fairly relaxed anyaway  )
