I see they cost 7.50 eurosBut for convince I think it would be well worth it.
article @ "Amsterdam: The OV Public Transportation Chipkaart"
The 7.50 one time charge for a blank card is cheap compared having to get a new day card every couple days. by having the OV cards you do not need to worry about is this card still good or not what I can see it is good on trains, plains?, city busses, & trems.this also means not trying to figure out if I have the correct ticket (just one to keep track of). Any other thoughts on getting a OV-Chipkaart over the day trip tickets.
The card is valid on most of the public transport throughout the country. However to use it on the train you must keep a minimum value of 20 on the card or it will not allow you to check in. You must also activate the card for use on the train at the service desk.
As for the GVB passed, they are only good for the tram, metro and GVB buses in Amsterdam. Depending upon your length of stay and how often you plan to use public transit, the pass may work out as a better value. http://en.gvb.nl/ovinmamsterdam/Pages/bestdeal.aspx And then simply purchase paper tickets for use on the train, fare and schedule information can be found here http://www.ns.nl/en

Thanks for the info; but I will be primarily in the Centrum w/ a trip out to Jordaan & maybe one day trip to Haarlem. and I like the idea of "KISS" (keep it simple stupid).

I figure it would be much easier for me all around town, to use a anonymous OV-Chipkaart. I'll be meeting you on Friday at one of the T&T's, I'll be the one with the dear in the headlights look due to jet lag, & we can talk about the OV carts more.

jwal162, unless you are going to be doing multiple trips a year and travelling extensively out side Amsterdam I think the card is a waste for the occasional traveller, the day(s) card from the GVB and paper train tickets are your most economical way.
It still makes a nice souvenir, and is valid for some years after purchase. Leaving money on mine is a nice way to come in on the bus. Only 3,02 on the way in.

I miss the strippenkarrt(sp)
Like #Nimrod said it will make a nice souvenir; & 7.50 euros is nothing to the total I've spent on just this trip.
And it will save me time next trip just through some more on their & I am ready to go. and I am starting to think of more then one trip a year for the next couple of years. if not more. In time I my even try to move/retire to Amsterdam.

Jim, if you have plans on being a regular visitor, then I would get one.
It's worked out well for me, and has gotten me away from the train. Taking bus 197 in, you can then tram-connect to much of the city from Museumplein or Leidseplein/Marnixstraat.
Fuckin' train...who needs it?
Can you get a chipkaart at the airport? I have one but want to get one for my daughter when we land so we can get the bus into town as our boat is near the museums.

You should be able to get one at the NS desk or the AKO news stand on the arrival level.
