The latest spam attack made me wonder if it might be an idea to prevent new members from posting links before they'd made, say, 25 posts or so.
Even that wouldn't stop the most determined -- I've noticed some spammers start out with a few anodyne posts before the links start. So maybe they should have to request the facility to post links. It's usually easy to tell the newbies who are going to spam, because the posts are virtually content-free. Though some people write like that normally.

I've installed several of these mods over the years but they generally cause more trouble than they avoid.
The spam countermeasures already in place to stop spambots actually frustrate more real people than robots.
Fortunately the worst spammers are fairly rare and quite easy to deal with. So long as people don't reply to them they do little harm.
All I can do is make my usual pleas -
> Please welcome all new members and give them the benefit of the doubt
> Please don't jump to conclusions, however suspicious you may be of someone's motives
> Please be polite even when others are rude - that's how we preserve the good atmosphere and don't descend to the levels of some other places
> If you spot spam just click the report button and I'll deal with it
thanks

Good points Lemm, thanks for that; and duly noted!
